The dismantling of the footbridge on the old railroad in Beniaján gives way to the Greenway that will cover 40,000 m2 of Huerta (25/07/2018)

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, and the Councilor for Urban Planning, Environment and Garden, Antonio Navarro, attended today in Beniaján the dismantling of the elevated pedestrian walkway that crossed , until today, the old railway line from Chinchilla to Cartagena.

The works that are being carried out from the Town Hall do not include only the dismantling and elimination of this footbridge located about 300 meters from the Mayor's Office of Beniaján, but will suppress the removal of two more overpasses on the old railway line: the second existing in Beniaján (located next to the first) and that of San José de la Vega.

These works are part of one of the strategic transformation projects of the municipality of Murcia: the new Vía Verde of more than 40,000 m2 that will run through the hamlets of Los Dolores, San José de la Vega, Beniaján, TorreagĂźera and Los Ramos, through an itinerary of 8.5 kilometers, which will benefit 45,000 residents.

In this sense, José Ballesta said that "we are going to return to Murcia and Murcia a space that is theirs, a space that has been delimited by barriers and in disuse for many years and that, this next spring, will be open to all for become a unique natural and leisure resource in Murcia, which can be enjoyed on foot and by bicycle ".

A walk through the heart of the Vega del Segura and the Sierra Murcia

The new Vía Verde crosses the heart of the Huerta de Murcia and offers unique scenic views: on one side, the entire Vega del Segura, and on the other, the Miravete and Altaona mountain ranges.

It is also a route very close to the towns and their services, which also makes possible the gastronomic and leisure activities.

"The other priority objective of this action, which is a before and after in terms of cohesion between neighborhoods and population centers of the Costera Sur, is to unite people, create social and economic cohesion through the elimination of these barriers and allow these districts, which have been developed on both sides of the road, to recover the connection and share new opportunities for growth, "explained the mayor.

The widest Greenway in the Region

The Greenway will have a tree mass composed of more than 2,200 large trees, as the City Council will plant 1,800 new native trees, in addition to the more than 400 that already exist in the layout and that will be conditioned and integrated into the landscape.

The nature trail will be accessible to pedestrians and cyclists alike and will have a width of 5 meters, which makes it the widest Greenway in the entire Region.

The itinerary will have a naturalized pavement that will integrate and mimic the landscape.

Dismantling of the structure and demolition of the foundations

The elimination of the three pedestrian footbridges on the old railway line is being carried out by the dismantling of the steel structure (which is cut with a torch) and the subsequent demolition of the concrete piles and foundations that complete the structure.

Throughout this month of August, the suppression of the three overpasses will be completed and all obstacles in the railway line will be eliminated (four other non-elevated metal footbridges currently existing on the railway track will also be removed).

Once these demolition and subsequent cleaning works have been completed, the irrigation network that runs the entire route will start running.

Between October and November, the planting of 1,800 trees will begin, followed by natural paving.

It is estimated that, as of February 2019, the works will end, involving a municipal investment of about 740,000 euros.

Universal accessibility along the entire path

In order to guarantee universal accessibility along the 8.5 km of footpath, ramps with small gradients adapted to people with reduced mobility will be established.

To save the great slope existing in a specific section of Los Ramos with a pedestrian crossing adapted to the universal accessibility regulations, offering a comfortable alternative to people of all ages and with mobility problems.
