Proyecto Hombre serves more than 1,650 people in 2017 (24/07/2018)

The program aimed at young people and adolescents experienced an increase of 35% during 2017. The number of women who ask for help to treat their addiction problems increased by 18%.

Cannabis, 94%, has been the main cause of treatment among young people, and 7% have demanded attention for emerging addictions without substance to ICTs and online gambling.

The substance that has caused the greatest demand for treatment, in adults, is cocaine by 37%.

Proyecto Hombre Murcia today presented its annual report of activities in the Region of Murcia during 2017, a year in which it served more than 1,650 people.

The event was attended by Mayor José Ballesta, the president of the Board of Solidarity and Reintegration Foundation, Tomás Zamora Ros, the Councilor for Sports and Health, Felipe Coello, the director of the Murcia Project Man, Asunción Santos de Pascual, and the counselor of Health, Manuel Villegas.

José Ballesta highlighted "the 23 years of service work to the Murcian community, of solidarity and generosity of Proyecto Hombre, more than two decades of specialized work in the prevention and treatment of addictions, always striving to preserve human dignity.

Proyecto Hombre is one of those essential institutions, made up of a group of people who give themselves to others by giving the best of themselves, through their work and experience, and that would not be possible without the hundreds of volunteers who, together with the professionals, make this miracle possible that is called Proyecto Hombre ".

The memory of the institution, through figures, reflects the existent problematic in relation to the consumption of drugs and other addictions;

During 2017, almost 1,650 people attended its various programs, 9% more than the previous year, continuing the upward trend of recent years.

It also includes the work done in addiction prevention programs, which are developed in schools and other organizations, and with which they have reached more than 6,000 people.

Profile

The majority profile served in Proyecto Hombre has been that of a man, with an average age of 38 years, married, with average studies who started the consumption of substances at 18 years old and who asks for help mainly for cocaine consumption;

followed by very high levels of polydrug use, which are usually alcohol and cocaine (31%).

This profile is addressed, above all, through the Night Program, which was the most demanded during 2017, and attended by 171 people.

It is aimed at people with problems arising from the use, abuse and dependence of substances and other addictions, which require attention compatible with their work, family, social and personal commitments.

The problem of women

Another of the programs that experienced an increase with respect to the previous year was that of Mujer, a specific program where individualized attention is offered and the problem that women have associated with the use of substances is addressed, since it has been found that they are more reluctant to ask for help.

Hence, it is noteworthy that only 14% of users served in Proyecto Hombre were women, who enter later in treatment, since the average age with which they enter is 42 years.

Mention also that, due to these associated difficulties that women present and their delay in going to treatment, makes them arrive at this one with a more serious profile, so they access the Base Program (18%).

Youth and ICTs

During 2017, a special effort was made by Proyecto Hombre to respond to the incipient demand observed in the program aimed at young people and adolescents, whose users have increased almost 35% compared to the previous year.

The main substance for which young people have gone to the center has been for the consumption of cannabis (94%), followed by alcohol (90%).

Proyecto Hombre has also focused on the emerging problem of addictions without substance, as is the case with ICTs and gambling with betting among young people.

It is noteworthy that almost 7% of the attentions have been due to problems arising from the use of Information and Communication Technologies (4% of these have been exclusively for this problem).

On the other hand, they have treated 12% of young people who had some problem with the game, being remarkable that almost 4% did not present any consumption of associated substance.

"Given this reality," said the director of Proyecto Hombre, Asunción Santos, "we are seeing the potential risk posed by the misuse of new technologies, which is why it is our responsibility to respond and anticipate, through the development of interventions adapted to this problem. and through well-founded prevention programs in which the risk of ICTs is warned but, above all, educating young people and families in the correct use of technologies and the Internet, since they will be fundamental tools in their daily lives "

Interested in prevention

Project Man advocates, one more year, for the importance of preventive work as the best way to deal with the problem of addictions, both in the educational field and in the workplace.

During 2017, 6,000 people attended to students, teachers, parents and workers.

In this sense, Tomás Zamora, stressed "we have to be close to families and young people, who are our future, before it appears problematic, teaching them that there is another way of doing things in this world that changes so quickly", encouraging once again the society of Murcia to continue with the support that has been shown to Project Man, because "our work can only be done thanks to the effort, that public administrations, volunteers, workers and society in general perform in pursuit of social reintegration".
