PSOE, Now Murcia, Let's change Murcia and Trigueros propose to declare BIC the Real Fábrica de la Pólvora and its surroundings (22/07/2018)

The municipal groups of PSOE, now Murcia and Cambiemos Murcia, and the councilor not assigned Francisco Javier Trigueros, will take to the next plenary session a motion for the City Council to urge the General Directorate of Cultural Property to the declaration of Cultural Interest (BIC) of the facilities and gardens included in the set of the Real Fábrica de la Pólvora, in the center of the city.

The motion also calls for the revision and modification of the file of the facilities in the Special Plan of the Artistic Historic Site of Murcia (PECHAM), which only grants a degree of protection to the main pavilion and does not include the history of the group, whose origins they go back to 1654 with the foundation of the factory in the time of Felipe IV, in lands bought from the Church, according to a research carried out by the professor of Art History at the University of Murcia Manuel Pérez Sánchez.

The three formations and the mayor consider necessary the inclusion in the document of the lateral annexes, the perimeter wall, the old garden of the offices, the channels of the channels Caravija and Aljufía, the walk of bananas, the library (current Statistical Service ), the refining workshop of saltpeter (current Bullfighting Museum) and the chimney of the workshop to carbonize, in order to promote the rehabilitation and enhancement of the whole.

These actions would help to recover the historical axis that forms the ditch of the Aljufía, which now runs under the city, but on the shore of which were located buildings of great value such as the convent of La Merced, the Circus Theater, the convent of Las Claras ( including the remains of the Keep Keep) and, even, the remains of the old Arrabal de la Arrixaca.

Part of these last ones remain buried under the lands of the factory, deserving, according to the formations of the opposition, the same degree of protection that those that occupy the site of San Esteban.

Among the historical chapters associated with the Real Fábrica de la Pólvora, for more than a century reference in the rest of Spain, highlights its role in the War of Independence as the sole supplier of gunpowder, bullets and rifles to the Spanish army, without which Victory at the Battle of Bailén would not have been possible.

In addition, prominent figures such as the military engineer, architect and mathematician Melchor de Luzón, one of the most brilliant minds of the second half of the seventeenth century, or the baroque painter Mateo Gilarte, Maestro Mayor in 1658, worked among its walls.
