The parks of Murcia will have pictograms adapted for children with ASD thanks to the Cátedra de Autismo Obra Social La Caixa (18/07/2018)

The University of Murcia and the Banking Foundation 'La Caixa' have signed on Wednesday the collaboration agreement for the financing of projects of the Autism Chair Obra Social La Caixa, which works from the University of Murcia for the integration of people with disorders of the autistic spectrum (ASD).

Thanks to the funding provided by the Obra Social La Caixa for three years, the Chair of the University of Murcia so far Cátedra Astrade- can carry out research and social awareness actions.

The annual economic contribution is 45,000 euros.

One of the projects developed thanks to this collaboration will be launched this fall.

The parks of the city of Murcia will have from September next adapted pictograms for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).

These pictograms allow children to identify with a visual symbol recognized for them where they are and thus favor their integration, facilitating the game.

The agreement for the realization of this project is almost completed with the City of Murcia and the intention of the University of Murcia is that, after the first experience in the parks, pictograms are also installed in schools and other leisure spaces in the city of Murcia. Murcia.

"Autistic children have a way of relating and processing different information, with them, at home and at school, we work with universal pictograms that make it possible for them to recognize the places and activities that take place there," he explains. The objective of the Chair is that similar initiatives are carried out in Cartagena and Lorca.

"It is a matter of rights that children with autism can enjoy public spaces under equal conditions, and for them it is very difficult to do so if they do not identify where they are or what they are seeing," insists Méndez, who says that the next step in this project it will be to get the chambers of commerce to join the initiative and the businesses are also identified with recognizable pictograms.

Thanks to the funding of the Obra Social La Caixa, the Chair of Autism of the University of Murcia is also carrying out projects such as the so-called 'Recreos inclusivos', which in form to professionals from fifty educational centers of the Region of Murcia to get children with autism spectrum disorders can be integrated into the daily game with their peers, the most direct form of inclusion.

An agreement with a vocation for the future

The office of the rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, has welcomed on Wednesday the signing of the agreement between the Banking Foundation 'La Caixa' and the University of Murcia.

The agreement signed this year has also meant the change of the name of the Chair, until now called the Astrade Chair, which is now called the Autism Chair of the La Caixa Social Work;

a change of name that wants to make clear the commitment of CaixaBank.

The collaboration agreement is signed for one year, but as the representatives of the entity assistants have made clear in the firm, it has a vocation for permanence.

The rector of the University of Murcia has expressed his satisfaction for the continuity of this collaboration that allows to investigate and improve the social acceptance of those who have an autistic disorder.

"It is one of the many social needs to which the University responds with the work of people involved who decide to take the initiative and the support of entities such as CaixaBank," said the rector.
