The pruning of more than 15,000 palms of Murcia and districts begins (14/07/2018)

The works have begun in the Palm Grove of Santiago and Zaraiche, extending through the city and districts.

"The objective of this action is to guarantee the development of palm trees and the safety of the residents of the municipality, which is our priority," explains the mayor of Modernization of Urban Quality and Administration, José Guillén.

With the arrival of summer begins the pruning of one of the most noteworthy elements of the green areas, the palm trees.

They are going to eliminate the dry palms, as well as the fruits that can fall to the public road of 15,000 copies distributed between the city and districts.

These works are being carried out by several teams composed of more than a dozen people, and they are expected to last until next November.

Although the work will be developed throughout the municipality of Murcia, some of the places where there is a greater concentration of palm trees are the Palmeral de Santiago and Zaraiche, Alquerías, La Alberca or El Palmar, among others.

The palm trees are being pruned by professionals who have all the necessary security measures for the development of these tasks and complying with the strictest regulations.

Once the pruning is finished, phytosanitary treatments will be carried out on the specimens to avoid the presence of red palm weevil, thus ensuring the growth and development of the more than 15,000 palm trees in the municipality of Murcia.

"The objective of this action is to guarantee the development of palm trees and the safety of the residents of the municipality, which is our priority," explains the mayor of Modernization of Urban Quality and Administration, José Guillén.

Inspections on other trees

Special attention is also paid to other trees in the municipality, specifically to those called as singular.

These inspections are carried out by external specialists and municipal technicians, who pay special attention to the heat waves suffered by the municipality, since high temperatures affect the trees, specifically the ficus because of their large size.

In addition, the Parks and Gardens service makes daily batches through the gardens to visually check the condition of the specimens, although the technical work of height is carried out every six months approximately.

There are 70 installed in different ficus sensors that increase security controls reporting humidity in the environment of the tree, temperature, irrigation, soil moisture, as well as foliar.

"This pioneering initiative, since it is the first time in Spain that is carried out on ornamental trees, allows us to have enough data to determine a historical and predict situations of tree stress and minimize risks" remarked José Guillén.
