Murcia exports its model of good practices in water management to Mexico (09/07/2018)

The delegation formed by a score of entrepreneurs and farmers from the Mexican state of Guanajuato visit Murcia to learn about the local model of water management.

José Ballesta: "Our ancestors from Huerta, more than a thousand years ago, developed the most impressive hydraulic engineering system known, dominating the Segura River and channeling water through ditches, starters, azarbes and ferris wheels".

The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, together with the councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesus Pacheco, today received the twenty entrepreneurs who make up the Mexican delegation of farmers in the state of Guanajuato, who have come to Murcia on a business mission to learn about the local model of water management.

The general director of the Coordination of Promotion of Foreign Trade of Guanajuato, Luis Ernesto Rojas Ávila, and the president of the Irrigation District of this state of central Mexico, Agustín Robles Montenegro, expressed to the mayor his intention to transfer to his region "the Murcia's model of success, because even though Guanajuato has a fertile land and more than enough water, agricultural production does not even reach 50% of what Murcia generates ".

In his speech, José Ballesta said that "in Murcia we have a deep water culture rooted in centuries of history.

Our ancestors from Huerta, more than a thousand years ago, developed the most impressive hydraulic engineering system known, dominating the Segura River and channeling water through ditches, starters, azarbes and ferris wheels ".

"Today, ten centuries later, that almost mathematical design is still working and watering our garden," said the mayor, who added that "Murcian children, from very young, learn the value of water and that not a drop should be wasted" .

Mexicans invited the mayor to visit the state of Guanajuato, which has 5.8 million inhabitants, to continue sharing positive experiences and establish a twinning alliance with common objectives.

The visit of this international delegation was facilitated in the Future Forum in Spanish, which hosted the city of Murcia last May, and which brought together businessmen, intellectuals and heads of institutions in Spain and Latin America, around the common language
