"The chancla is fine for the pool but not for regular use" (06/07/2018)

The Catholic University of Murcia has hosted the 'Foot and Ankle Course', organized by the Spanish Association of Podiatric Surgery (AECP).

Experts and podiatrists from all over Spain have met at the UCAM to receive up-to-date and specific training in pathologies that require surgical intervention.

The president of the AECP and Professor of Podiatric Surgery of the UCAM, Joaquín Óscar Izquierdo, explained that foot and ankle problems affect a broad spectrum of the population, "but after forty years the deformities are produced with more often, especially in women, because they use narrower shoes, "which is why practically 80% of women suffer from foot problems, because of not wearing appropriate shoes."

The expert warns that deformities can occur in the foot if not treated properly.

Prevention is key to avoid being taken to an operating room: "Above all you have to wear good shoes, in Murcia you wear a lot of flip flops, and I understand that it is because of the heat, but it is not a good element to take care of your foot. The chancla is fine for the pool or the beach, but not for regular use, good footwear and a foresight can avoid many injuries, for which biomechanical studies can be carried out with a podiatrist who orients on the type of footwear and even Sock that should be used to avoid subsequent injuries. "

Izquierdo also recommends taking the youngest to the podiatrist to prevent many pathologies: "As children, we can predict what kind of deformities may occur in the future and propose preventive treatments to avoid these problems for the elderly".

Manuel Pardo, Vice-Dean of the Degree in Podiatry has reminded that in addition to the university degree and these training courses "the UCAM has launched the Master in Clinical and Sports Podiatry and is closing the Master's Program in Podiatric Surgery. to expand and improve the teaching we offer, always seeking specialization, with the aim of improving attention to society ".

He also recalled that the next course will be taught as a new double degree in Nursing and Podiatry.
