Miguel Ãngel Maestre Yago wins the UMU painting prize with a work in which he pays homage to his father (06/07/2018)

"I feel a huge joy for having managed to win a prestigious contest like the painting prize at the University of Murcia".

These were the first words of Miguel Ángel Mago Yago, a native of Elda (Alicante) when he heard the decision of the jury of the XVIII edition of the painting prize of the University of Murcia, endowed with 5,000 euros, which he won with his work "Escritos desde el silence".

The winning work is a tribute to his father, recently deceased, and also a painter, who at the end of his life lost his speech and only expressed himself by writing with a pencil, something that the artist has tried to express in his painting.

"Escritos desde el silencio", is one of the integral works of this series that has as its central nucleus its parent.

Miguel Ángel Maestre is a doctor in Fine Arts and a full professor of the Body of Teachers of Plastic Arts and Design of the Generalitat Valenciana, where he teaches the subject of Artistic Drawing.

In 1993 he won the First Prize ex-aequo in the XI José Mongrell Painting Contest in the city of Cullera (Valencia), and in 1996 he won an Honorable Mention in the VI Painting Biennial Vila de Mislata (Valencia).

Two accésits were also awarded, corresponding to Carolina Valls Juan, from Sueca (Valencia), for her work "Flisch # 2" and to Mª Paz Pellín Sánchez, from Novelda (Alicante) for "Biblioteca".

The ruling was made in the early afternoon of Wednesday, July 5, in the UMU Museum (Old Artillery Barracks on Cartagena Street), where the jury was composed by Rector José Luján Alcaraz, as honorary president, and acting as vocals Rosa Brun Jaén, Painter and Professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Granada;

Pedro Cano Hernández, painter, Doctor Honoris Causa for the UMU;

Manuel Fernández-Delgado Cerdá, Head of Museums of the City of Murcia;

Mª Ángeles Sánchez Rigal, Director of the Art Nine Gallery of Murcia;

Soledad Sevilla Portillo, Pintora, and as secretary Carmen Veas Arteseros, head of the Culture Service, University of Murcia.
