The University of Murcia presents LOLA, an artificial intelligence assistant to help new students (05/07/2018)

The University of Murcia has presented this Thursday in society to Lola, the chatbot born to guide and help future students of the UMU and the Polytechnic University of Cartagena with all their pre-registration and registration procedures.

This example of artificial intelligence for customer service is underway since June and already solves doubts such as when the registration process begins or when they can check if they have been admitted to the desired career.

The system learns as it interacts with users.

The more different things you ask, the more you will be able to answer.

Lola is a project of the University Information Service (SIU) that has been developed with the Area of Information Technology and Applied Communications of the University of Murcia (ATICA) and the company 1 million bot.

Lola uses Google's dialogflow technology, which allows her to learn from her interactions and continuous improvement.

This new development has been financed by Santander bank.

The chatbot is underway on a pilot basis since last June 9 and has already had thousands of conversations with users.

Especially Lola has resolved doubts about the publication of the EBAU notes, the review of the exams, the court notes and about the pre-registration process.

The system has been able to solve 90% of the queries.

Only last year the SIU attended 28,000 queries related to the admission process to the University, queries that can now be resolved by Lola.

Access to Lola is available through the SIU website and through the DURM mobile application used by future university students in the single district of the Region of Murcia.

José Luján, rector of the University of Murcia, stressed the importance of "this pioneering initiative that is an example of the commitment of the University for new technologies" and has called attention to the fact that Lola is learning as it interacts with her. "Luján has revealed in the presentation that Lola is not a casual name, it is a tribute to Lola Ferrer, the first person who started working at the Information Service University of Murcia answering the doubts of the students.

Pedro Miguel Ruiz, delegate of the rector for the Digital University, explained that Lola is a chatbot that interacts and understands the language that students use.

"This is only a first brushstroke of what will be future adaptation of the University in the future with the use of new technologies, we will see artificial intelligence also in teaching and the way in which students learn students and especially in being able to personalize the experience of those who pass through the University ".

Ruiz has been confident that the innovative initiative that has launched the UMU is extending to the rest of society.

Andrés Martínez, head of relationship with Google developers for seven countries in Europe, explained how technology works and the company's commitment to integrating artificial intelligence into the day-to-day of users.

Martinez has offered a conference entitled 'The Future of Conversational Interfaces'.

Andrés Pedreño Muñoz, president of IT & IS and former director of the University of Alicante, who highlighted that the tool presented by the University of Murcia, and in whose development his company intervened, "has enormous value because it allows to resolve doubts, has also intervened. raised by students in their natural language. "

Pedreño has ensured that the UMU is a pioneer in this regard and has recognized that it has been very stimulating to respond to the challenge of launching a chatbot that serves students seven days, 24 hours, with a completely natural language.

The former director of Alicante has stressed that there are very few universities in the world that have this service and that "without a doubt this is the best chatbot for international students."

Andrés Pedreño has given a talk in the presentation in which he spoke about the 'Impact of Artificial Intelligence in the digital economy'.
