Students of the University of Murcia will give music recitals in the oncology waiting room of La Arrixaca (02/07/2018)

Students and staff of the University of Murcia will participate in the volunteer project 'Music, emotions and life' to bring music therapy to patients receiving cancer treatment at the Virgen de La Arrixaca Hospital in Murcia.

Thanks to the agreement signed on Monday between the Murcian Health Service and the University of Murcia, University members who play an instrument can register and go one day a week to give recitals that improve the welfare of patients who are in the waiting room to receive chemotherapy sessions.

"Patients who come to the hospital during the day do so with the uncertainty of how their disease is evolving, which is why these volunteers generate an especially pleasant environment with music," said Asensio López Santiago, managing director of the hospital. SMS during the signing of the agreement.

López Santiago added that, in addition, it is known "that the intervention of art helps the improvement of patients, this possible improvement is not the objective of the project, but it is also important and positive".

The Volunteering Service of the University of Murcia will offer the university community this program from September so that all interested parties can register.

This initiative has been underway for two years with students from the Conservatory and the arrival of the University of Murcia will give a greater impetus to the project.

In fact, during the signing of the agreement both the managing director of the SMS and Ana Millán, coordinator of Attention to Diversity and Volunteering at the UMU, explained that the idea is to expand the project in the short term so that these interventions are not only with music, but also through activities with painting or reading books, and also to the patients and relatives of the ICU, as well as to the patients of the Dementia Unit.

The rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, has been convinced that this type of agreement makes the University "comply with society and give back part of what she gives".

In addition, Luján believes that for the training of university students participate in projects like these "is as important as approving their subjects."

María Dolores López Ruiz, promoter of this university volunteer program, explained that it is the students and volunteers who choose the pieces they play and that it is always relaxing music.

Those who decide to participate will have to commit themselves only to go one hour a week to La Arrixaca.

"What we would like is that there would be enough volunteers to be able to cover the morning and the afternoon every day, that is an objective", says López Ruiz, who has also proposed between the short and medium term projects to organize concerts and recitals of the university choir for the patients of La Arrixaca.

Agreement for volunteering in Blanca

On the other hand the rector of the University of Murcia has signed on Monday another agreement so that students can participate in volunteer projects organized and developed by the City of Blanca, whose mayor, Esther Hortelano, has signed the agreement in the Convalecencia.

"With this agreement, it is open for university students to develop social awareness, an interesting opportunity for their knowledge to benefit their people," said the mayor.

The Rector Luján has emphasized "how important for the University of Murcia are the permanent headquarters for the vertebration of the territory and for the connection of the university with the Region".

The agreement with the municipality of Blanca is added to the collaboration with 14 other municipalities of the Region to carry out volunteer projects.
