The UCAM creates a garden with ecological criteria on its campus in Los Jerónimos (27/06/2018)

The UCAM has launched a project to recover an area of ​​abandoned garden to turn it into an ecological orchard of native trees and fruit, careful with practices that respect the environment.

It is part of the Sustainable UCAM program, which includes 'Paper 0' actions or energy efficiency in accordance with a Master Plan designed by the specialized company Suez Advanced Solutions.

This area, acquired by the UCAM and located in the southern part of the campus, was dedicated to the exploitation of citrus fruits and was in a state of neglect, so the first action is being the cleaning and clearing of stubble, bushes, canes and sick trees.

The pruning remains are crushed and mixed with the land for organic enrichment and the rest is given to an authorized manager.

After the accomplishment of the opportune study they are going away to conserve and to recover the most significant and autochthonous trees (fig trees, a momera, olive trees, a pine, among others).

All this following the established by the administration.

Afterwards, the land will be prepared to plant fruit trees, preferably native varieties, some of which are practically disappeared, with an adequate irrigation system for their maintenance, acting with sustainability criteria, avoiding burning and therefore emissions to the atmosphere or the environment. use of aggressive products in the plantations, and collaborating with carbon recovery.

UCAM Sustainable within the framework of the encyclical Laudato Sì

This performance is part of the global Sustainable UCAM project, which the Catholic University San Antonio de Murcia has designed echoing the call of Pope Francis in his encyclical Laudato Sì on the 'Care of the Common House'.

This environmental program, which aims to position the University as a sustainable campus and train professionals who know the importance of preserving the environment, welcomes initiatives such as 'Paper 0', the promotion of the use of bicycles, the separation of waste or savings energy, with expected energy savings equivalent to the consumption of more than 50 homes and more than 110,000 kg of CO2 emissions per year.

The Catholic University is currently in the process of implementing the ISO 14001 standard.
