More than 150 performances make up the next season of the Romea and Circus theaters, with a daily cultural offer (27/06/2018)

Prestigious national interpreters such as Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Carmen Machi, Josep María Pou or Lluís Homar, musicians such as Dulce Pontes or Chucho Valdés, and major international shows from Canada, the United Kingdom and Uruguay, will be shown at the Romea and Circus, from September to January.

José Ballesta: "It is an open and versatile program, of high quality, in which international proposals gain weight without taking the local scene away".

In this season 2017/2018 that closes, more than 170,000 people have passed through both theaters, which is an increase of 20% compared to the viewers registered in 2015.

More than 150 performances of 96 different proposals make up the next season of the Romea and Circo de Murcia theaters, which from September will offer functions and shows from Tuesday to Sunday, uninterrupted.

Mayor José Ballesta, together with the Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, responsible for the coordination and programming of the Romea and Circo theaters, Juan Pablo Soler, and the artistic adviser of both stages, César oliva, presented this morning the first part of the 2018/2019 Program, which will run from September to January.

The event was attended by the members of several of the theater companies and musical promoters that star in the new cultural offer of the City of Murcia.

"This is an open and versatile program, which shies away from elitism and exclusivism, but which does not give up quality, and combines tradition and classicism with avant-garde and innovation," the mayor explained, adding that "they gain weight. the international proposals without taking away the local scene, a cultural offer that will offer functions uninterrupted almost daily, since the theaters will remain open from Tuesday to Sunday, both for the programmed shows and for their social use, giving space to the different collectives. "

Theater, music, dance, circus, puppets, zarzuela, opera, musical shows, storytelling, magic, humor, multidisciplinary proposals and even street proposals make up one of the best considered proposals in the national circuit, based "on our cultural model, which look for the balance between our traditional culture and historical references, and the avant-garde, innovation and cosmopolitanism ".

Viewers grow by 20% compared to 2015

The mayor stressed the fact of the "important effort of unification of programming and dissemination criteria that has been carried out over the last three years", which has meant a significant increase in attendance figures.

In this season 2017/2018 that closes, more than 170,000 people have passed through both theaters, which is an increase of 20% compared to the viewers registered in 2015, "explained the mayor.

"In Murcia there is a public that demands a very varied cultural offer, that is why we have sought complementarity between the theaters of the capital, which offer a specialized offer in disciplines and genres for each audience, opening spaces for high culture, but also for popular culture.

While in the Circus alternative and contemporary proposals are being made for a younger audience;

the Romea is the benchmark of classicism and excellence, constituting two scenarios with their own personality, "said the mayor.

Support for the local scene and Murcian companies

The programming of the first part of the new season 2018/2019 (the second part will be from February to June) stands out for the support to the Murcian companies, through four new co-productions.

Thanks to the support of the City of Murcia these companies can release their shows in the municipal theaters and have municipal financial contribution.

"We wanted our theaters to be a reflection of the national and international culture of the moment, bringing to Murcia shows that triumph all over the world, but also giving a central role to the Murcian local scene and its artistic quality, with these four co-productions and the 'Cycle Scene of Here', that repeats this year, with companies murcianas and local artists that work outside ", highlighted José Ballesta.
