Huerta Viva denounces the felling of trees and earthworks in the surroundings of the Jerónimos (27/06/2018)

The association warns that it is one of the best preserved areas of the Huerta Oeste, where the protective environments of the monastery of Los Jerónimos and La Ñora wheel are located.

The association Huerta Viva has been able to verify the felling of trees and earthworks with heavy machinery that since a few days ago is being carried out in a large farm near the Jerónimos monastery.

The area is located within the protection environment of the monastery as well as cultural interest, and is part of one of the best preserved orchard landscapes between Guadalupe and La Ñora, where the buildings are scarce and the Aljufía and Alfatego irrigation channels have been conserved open sky with small riparian forests.

Apart from the illegal buildings built next to the Jerónimos, for some years the UCAM has been acquiring orchards that are currently in complete abandonment, to which we must add the casing of the canal Churra la Vieja, the dumping of debris in Several points of the green path that crosses the place, and now the felling of trees and the movement of land of a large area of land.

All this is causing desertification and degradation of this area with high landscape, environmental and cultural values.

Huerta Viva does not know at the moment that these works are due, but warns that we are in the environment of protection of a good of cultural interest, and, therefore, any intervention needs the authorization of the General Directorate of Cultural Assets, not being able to carry out works that alter the architectural and landscape character of the area as required by the Law of Cultural Heritage of the Region of Murcia.
