500 volunteers collect more than 1,600 kilos of waste thanks to the Río Limpio Challenge (23/06/2018)

Among them, mattresses, pillows, furniture and even a television, plus 300 kilos of packaging and 200 kilos of paper.

The Mayor warned that "our natural heritage is immense and it is our obligation to conserve and care for it to bequeath it to future generations in the best conditions" and advanced news around the Segura in the coming months

More than 1,600 kilos of waste have been collected today thanks to the Clean River Challenge, which has gathered more than 500 volunteers committed to the common goal of enjoying a sustainable environment and raising awareness of the need to care for it.

On this occasion, the eye has been placed on the urban Segura, from which environment have been obtained 200 kilos of paper, 300 kilos of packaging, 700 kilos of the rest of waste and 400 kilos of bulky, including furniture, mattresses , pillows and a television.

The initiative has departed from the councils of Infrastructure, Works and Services and Modernization of Urban Administration and Development, directed by Rebeca Pérez and José Guillén, respectively, in collaboration with the concessionaire Ferrovial Servicios and the association Región de Murcia Limpia, and In it, different associations and volunteers have participated.

The event began at 9:30 am at the meeting point of volunteers, where the Mayor, José Ballesta, and council members Rebeca Pérez and Antonio Navarro have attended.

'Our natural heritage is immense and it is our obligation to preserve it and take care of it to bequeath it to future generations in the best conditions,' explained Ballesta, who was satisfied because "fortunately we Murcia are getting more and more aware of the Segura River and its specks are full of people at all hours. "

In the minutes prior to the start of today's activity, the Mayor advanced that before the end of the year there will be more news about the river, with the immediate start of the works of the new riverwalk and the completion of two projects on both banks, between other actions

At the end of the cleaning campaign, which lasted for more than two hours, children's activities and a party for all participants began, with a musical performance by Eliana Poveda and free tasting of paella.

The person in charge of each team has been in charge of writing down the waste that is collected to measure the quantities and recycling it according to the material.

Cleaning has also been done with the collaboration of 'Uncle de la Barca', Skate in Murcia and Murcia Clean.

In addition, STV Gestión, concessionary company of parks and gardens of the Department of Modernization of the Administration and Urban Development, has reviewed and pruned the trees that invades the cycle path, also supporting some cleaning tasks.

At all times, a Civil Protection team was present to ensure the assistance and safety of all the participants.

"This action has served to raise awareness about the care of the environment and the importance of selective collection of waste and recycling," said Rebeca Perez, for whom it is also important to "team up with all the volunteers who have participated."

"With this performance we have seen once again the willingness of Murcians to take care of and keep clean the Segura River, which, like other public places in the city, needs a continuous cleaning so that it is in perfect condition. we also make citizens aware of the importance of taking care of our environment, of recycling and, in short, of betting on the environment ", added Rebeca Pérez.
