The Murcians will "step on" the urban network of the La Arrixaca suburb through a pedestrian route that will reveal the historical value (22/06/2018)

The Governing Board approves the agreement with the UMU that lays the foundations for scientific research and the enhancement of the San Esteban Deposit.

The plan of works will begin with the adaptation of the medieval urban framework, in which a soft lighting will be installed, and whose archaeological remains will be part of a temporary exhibition

The Governing Board has given its approval to the collaboration agreement with the University of Murcia for scientific research, training, enhancement and dissemination of the Archaeological Site of San Esteban and has authorized an expense amounting to 100,188 euros.

The agreement supposes the road map to carry out the consolidation and valorization works of the main reservoir spaces.

Among other actions, a pedestrian route that experts consider essential for citizens to take direct knowledge of the historical value of the urban fabric of the suburb of La Arrixaca will be enabled.

The works of this Phase 0 will involve the presentation of the suburb to visitors and their integration within the city, prior to the execution of the definitive protection coverage.

They will start after the summer and will last for two months.

The project aims to achieve the direct participation of residents and visitors in the knowledge, conservation and enjoyment of the site.

To achieve this, the action program foresees the conditioning of visitor circulation areas, original streets and archaeological sites.

All these will be presented as examples of the architecture and way of life of the medieval residents.

The work plan will begin with the adaptation of the medieval urban framework, in which a soft lighting will be installed, through which the pedestrians and the multidisciplinary team will pass.

The remains of these construction elements will be part of a temporary exhibition.

Remains fully preserved

It will also intervene in certain spaces that have been chosen for their emblematic or significant character or for being exemplary pieces of the characteristic domestic architecture of the suburb.

In this case they are:

- Oratory, are the only fully preserved remains that can be found in the city of Murcia, with the exception of the oratory of San Juan de Dios and the segmented remains of the Great Mosque, under the current Cathedral of Murcia

- Maqbara, burial space with a marked religious and tribal character.

Exhumation is planned as a sample of some of these burials for anthropological study.

- Enclosure I and II, residential spaces with a marked character to establish social differences and urban evolution in a medieval Andalusian city.

- House 1, medium-sized residential space that completes the bias of social differences and urban evolution in a medieval Andalusian city.

- Shops, artisan spaces with a marked character of the daily life of an Andalusian city and the socioeconomic solutions that affect its inhabitants.

- Houses 12, 14, 30 and 50, residential spaces of small size.

The I-enclosures with an area of 465 m 2 - and II - whose extension is close to 380 m 2 - constitute well-defined and individualized spaces and their advanced archaeological excavation allows to develop an interdisciplinary research work of historical character, archaeological, anthropological, conservation, botanical, faunistic, edaphological, ceramological, metallographic, mineralogical and on any other aspect susceptible to be investigated.

The University of Murcia will be responsible for carrying out this research work.

The interventions that will be carried out in these spaces include the review and diagnosis of the state of conservation of the remains, as well as the installation of a modular roof system for work and protection of a reversible nature, removable and easy to install and remove to avoid inclement weather meteorological

Master Plan

The Master Plan contemplates, in addition to these previous works, several phases.

The next one will be the one of greater relevance when foreseeing the coverage and protection of the archaeological remains, which will mean the recovery of the public space above ground and the establishment of underground routes of the site.

It must be remembered that last December the Governing Board initially approved the Special Arrangement and Protection Plan for the Arrixaca Nueva Arrabal Zone, a document that forms part of the San Esteban Master Plan, whose processing is mandatory and It is carried out in parallel and independent to that of this.

Its fundamental objective is to achieve physical, economic and social revitalization and the preservation and enhancement of the San Esteban complex.
