MasterChem, the new project of the UMU to promote scientific vocations among young people (19/06/2018)

The University of Murcia (UMU), from the Scientific Culture Unit, presents the MasterChem project, framed within the FECYT call.

This innovative initiative, inspired by the successful culinary program of similar title, aims to awaken the scientific vocations of young people, aged between six and eighteen, from Primary Education, Compulsory Secondary Education and Baccalaureate in the Region of Murcia.

How is it possible to register?

Teachers from different schools and institutes interested in having their students among those selected should send a video to the email ucc@um.es, explaining how they will motivate their students and what techniques they want to teach them before the celebration of the final contest, which will take place at the end of March 2019.

Those teachers enrolled in the project will be selected by a committee of experts, based on innovation in teaching techniques to their students and creativity, among other criteria.

The selected ones will receive, on the part of researchers of the UMU, a formation of the chemical techniques that they will have to transmit to the students, and that later will be applied during the final contest.

The selected teachers, together with their students, will have the opportunity to demonstrate their creative ability and their aptitude to perform chemical experiments in a timed time, during the final phase of MasterChem.

This will be done in a public ceremony, with a jury, made up of recognized experts in chemistry, who will assess the solving capacity, ingenuity and creativity of each group of students facing the challenge they will face.

Undoubtedly, this is a unique opportunity to put aside chemophobia and to change the irrational perception against the world of chemistry.

Therefore, the best way to change this current vision is to build a new one from the base, specifically through students where interest in science and technology and the critical and creative spirit arise more easily.
