The Office of Congresses of Murcia celebrates its XX Anniversary (15/06/2018)

Murcia, June 15, 2016.- The Office of Congress held yesterday the commemorative act of the 20th Anniversary of its foundation with a meeting at the San Esteban de Murcia palace that brought together more than 160 guests among members of the association, collaborators and authorities of the tourist sector and the municipality of Murcia.

Murcia Convention Bureau exceeded in 2017 the 202,000 attendees to congresses, conferences and conventions that took place in the city during 2017. A figure that was the best data of the last 20 years with an increase of more than 18,000 visitors to events with respect to the year previous.

Another historic milestone was also reached in 2017 with 1,220 events held, almost 200 more than the previous year (1,089) and again the best figure obtained since the opening of the Congress Office.

The president of the Office of Congress, Ricardo Zamora said during the celebration that, "the Office is formed by more than 90% of SMEs that have bet from the beginning for tourism and the promotion of Murcia as a brand to get events and visitors come more and more to the city. "

The Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, expressed his satisfaction for the increase in companies linked to the Office of Congresses and encouraged all the agents involved in tourism to sell the city of Murcia as an enclave " unique for the celebration of any event, congress and meeting and also an ideal place to spend holidays with friends or family ".

Murcia reached in 2016 the condition of 'Zone of Great Tourist Influx' when exceeding 600,000 overnight stays for the first time.

This condition was consolidated during 2017 with 748,000 overnight stays in the municipality.

During the commemorative act, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, Miriam Guardiola, congratulated the members of the association for the excellent results obtained last year, when the economic income for the city derived from professional tourism amounted to 48.8 million of euros, the second best data since records are kept.

According to a survey conducted by the Office of Congresses, the average expenditure of attendees to professional events in Murcia, without counting the cost of accommodation, amounted last year to 173 euros per day dedicated to transport costs, shopping, food and leisure .

For the first time since 2014, the profile of the congressman is that of a 38-year-old Spanish woman, who is not accompanied, travels in a private vehicle and stays an average of three days staying in four-star hotels.

The act ended with the intervention of the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, who recalled that the city exceeded in 2017 the 730,000 overnight stays for the first time and received more than 450,000 passengers, "exceptional figures for a city that deserves to continue growing "

For this reason, Ballesta launched a new challenge for tourism entrepreneurs by 2018, "to overcome half a million visitors in the city".

During the meeting he recognized the oldest companies of the association and the previous presidents of Murcia Convention Bureau with a gift for their contribution to the development of tourism meetings in the city over these 20 years.
