The City of Murcia has placed at the disposal of the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces of Spain to attend the humanitarian drama of the ship Aquarius, the network of municipal resources for the care and reception of migrants and refugees within the framework of their commitment to these groups, including the Refugee Assistance Office, which has served more than 500 people since its creation, through the NGOs that participate in the international reception program for asylum seekers.
In this regard, the councilor for Social Rights and Development Cooperation, Conchita Ruiz, explained that the Office has made offers for accommodation, donations in kind and effective, voluntary collaborations as interpreter, psychological support, Spanish classes, among others, all they have been referred to the entities responsible for the management of reception of asylum-seeking persons whose destination is the municipality of Murcia and which are ACCEM, CRUZ ROJA, MURCIA ACOGE and CEPAIM.
Other activities have also been carried out, such as the reservation of public spaces for socio-cultural and educational events with refugees, active participation in the celebration of World Refugee Day, and awareness-raising campaigns and the collection of material to develop them together with other social entities. ayudahumanitaria assuming the expenses incurred in the posters of the campaign and the transportation expenses that involved the collection ofproducts and storage.
From the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation has also actively collaborated in all requests of the Platform for Assistance to Refugees of Murcia for the realization of leisure activities and leisure for these people, in the coverage of means of transport , reservation of municipal sports spaces among others.
Network of reception and maintenance resources
The City of Murcia has a wide network of resources in reception and other aspects related to social integration, collected in an inventory that has been made available to the FEMP for the reception and accommodation, maintenance, social integration and employment, legal assistance , psychological, social and counseling and support to public schools, health and social centers;
specific attention to amenores and language learning and basic social skills.
The performance of this City Council has always been in coordination with the regional administration and the Government Delegation, as the latter is responsible for asylum and refuge policies.
The City Council has also requested the FEMP to clarify if the treatment that persons on board the Aquarius vessel should receive is the same as asylum seekers or they will receive another different consideration.
