2017 was the second best year of the Office of Congresses since its creation 20 years ago (12/06/2018)

In 2017, a total of 1,220 meetings were organized in Murcia, concentrating a total of 202,279 people, 28% more than in 2016. The estimation of the economic impact of the Meeting Market (MICE) in Murcia for the year 2017 has It was 48.8 million euros.

The Councilor for Economic Promotion, Culture and European Programs, Jesús Pacheco, together with the president of the Congress Office, Ricardo Zamora, presented the report of the past year of the Office of Congresses that this week celebrates its 20th anniversary.

Pacheco stressed that "2017 was the second best historical year, after 2007, in terms of economic impact recorded since the Office of Congress was created in 1998. From this agency has been professionalized the promotion of tourism aimed at attracting congresses and meetings for the city of Murcia, promotion of our city and its facilities has been made to hold these meetings and actions have been taken to facilitate contact between supply and demand ".

In 2017 a total of 1,220 meetings were held, with an attendance of 202,279 people, of which 81 were congresses, 60 business conventions and 1,079 conferences, symposiums and seminars.

The average cost per participant and day for those who attended the congresses is 233 euros for those who stayed in 4-star hotels and 213 euros for those who stayed in 3-star hotels.

This expense includes the registration fee, accommodation, maintenance and other extra expenses such as internal transportation and purchases.

The estimate of the direct economic impact in the city for the year 2017 has been 48.8 million euros, improving 28% with respect to the previous year.

With regard to the location of the entities organizing the meetings, this year the municipal initiative, with 57% of the total, is above the supra-municipal (the remaining 43%).

Regarding the generating character, the public sector (55%) was significantly above the private sector (45%).

Regarding the activity and theme of the meetings, the sectors that generated the greatest number of meetings were, first, the cultural sector with 23.4%, followed by the economic-commercial (19.6%) and social sectors. (15.1%), in second and third position respectively, leaving the medical doctor in fourth position.

According to the origin of the participants, and analyzing the territorial scope of those attending the congresses, most of them were of national origin with 57% (33% of which are of regional origin) and 43% of foreign origin.

Nationals from outside the Region of Murcia come, mainly, from Madrid, Andalusia and the Valencian Community.

The tourism of meetings continues presenting a very marked seasonality, where the months that presented the highest concentration of meetings were May, November and October / June, in that order.

Among them, they concentrate 51% of the total of events.

As in previous years, the average time that congressmen stay in Murcia on the occasion of the congress is three days.

Results of the survey made to the participants in congresses

The Congress Office conducts a biannual survey to a representative sample of congressmen, thus getting to know its assessment of the city of Murcia and its services and equipment, as well as its consumption habits, during the year 2017. The main results

The average age of the people attending the congresses is 38.29 years, with 80.8% of them being under 50 years old.

The number of women attending events (55.5%) exceeds that of men.

While in the previous data collection (year 2015) it was the men who attended the congresses mostly.

In 2017, 37.2% of the attendees have been accompanied to the congress, compared to 28% registered in 2015.

As in previous years, the average time that congressmen stay in Murcia on the occasion of the congress is three days.

The scientific program and the fact that Murcia is the place where the congress is held, are the two most valued reasons (7.6 and 5.1 respectively) when making the decision to attend the congress, beyond the professional obligation

The private vehicle is still the main means of transport used to come to Murcia (50.5%), at levels higher than those registered in 2015 (36.4%).

During the stay in Murcia, the most used means of transport was the taxi (31.4%), followed by the private vehicle (27%).

In addition, almost two thirds of respondents say they travel on foot through the city.

More than half of the respondents (52.5%) have opted for four-star hotels to stay during their stay in Murcia.

The restaurants are still the preferred place for congressmen to hold meals (40.1%), followed very closely by the congress headquarters (39.8%).

The breakfasts are mostly made at the hotel (62.6%) while the dinners are divided between bars (46.5%) and restaurants (36.7%).

Along with the congress material, most of the interviewees received tourist information about the city (66.2%).

Up to 69% of the congressmen interviewed indicated that they had made leisure activities during the congress (7.5% daytime leisure, 43.3% nighttime leisure and 18.1% both).

The congressmen show greater interest in carrying out gastronomic, cultural and shopping activities during their stay in Murcia.

91.3% of congressmen who have been in Murcia, say they would return to Murcia as tourists

Only 47% of the congressmen interviewed state that their company / institution has assumed all the expenses of the congress (this figure reached 64% in 2010).

On the contrary, 34.6% affirm that their company / institution has not assumed any part of the cost.

According to all these data collected, the profile of the congressman in Murcia is of a 38-year-old Spanish woman, who is not accompanied by the congress.

He arrives in the city in his private vehicle, stays an average of three days and stays in a four-star hotel.

The scientific program and the fact that Murcia is where the congress is held are the two reasons that have most influenced their intention to participate, making the registration in the three months before.

Along with leisure activities, he has been interested in gastronomic and cultural activities within the city.

During the days of the congress he has eaten in a restaurant and in general he is very satisfied with all the aspects related to the congress, highlighting the character and kindness of Murcia, the program of the congress, the facilities of the meeting rooms and the professional treatment of both the hotel and the headquarters, so much so, that he affirms that he would return to our city as a tourist.

On the other hand, next Thursday, the Office of Congresses and the Association of Collaborating Members of the Office of Congresses of Murcia, will celebrate its 20th anniversary by recognizing companies that have been in the association for 20 consecutive years.

Today there are more than 90 affiliated companies.
