Murcia City Council reduces its CO2 emissions by almost 2 tons during the first quarter of 2018 thanks to the'Mi Cole Saves with Energy' project (12/06/2018)

Several of the schools participating in the initiative have managed to save more than 10% of electricity compared to the same period of previous years Navarro: "10 new schools will participate in this very successful project, adding to the 10 centers that already had implanted this model of energy saving "

The Councilor for Urbanism, Environment and Garden of the City of Murcia, Antonio Navarro Corchón, accompanied by the President of the Sustainable Development Foundation, Emilio Ballester Fernández, and representatives of schools participating in the project 'My School Saves with Energy ', has presented this morning the results in the municipality of this project during the first quarter of the year.

This initiative, implemented through a pilot experience in 10 Public Centers of Murcia, has the participation of 277 teachers and 3,054 students.

Navarro said that "thanks to the efforts of students and teachers, and the support of the Sustainable Development Foundation, the schools participating in the project have managed to save 7,098 kWh in just three months.

This saving in electricity consumption means a reduction of 1.92 tons of CO2 emissions to the atmosphere in these first months of the year ".

The electricity savings achieved also translates into economic savings.

The Sustainable Development Foundation estimates a reduction of 1,977.42 Euros in the receipt of the light of the municipality of Murcia, in the period studied.

The councilor for Urban Planning, Environment, Water and Garden, has announced that "this pilot experience of the project 'My School Saves with Energy' will be developed with 20 schools from the next school year given the success of this quarter.

If implemented in all public schools of the Municipality of Murcia and districts, could achieve an electric saving of 386,318.62 kWh per year, leaving to emit 104.31 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere each year and reducing municipal electricity costs at 107,628.37 euros ".

The involvement of all the participating schools has been very high, directly influencing the positive results of the project, highlighting the participation of the schools "Santa Rosa de Lima", "Los Rosales" and "Saavedra Fajardo" in which the savings achieved have it was higher than the average, oscillating between 15% and 12% with respect to the same period of previous years.

"It is also important to highlight the importance of 'human efficiency', considering that the positive results of this project in the municipality of Murcia show that it is not always necessary to rely on large investments in technological innovation to increase savings and energy efficiency.

The knowledge and sensitivity of people, both teachers and the students themselves, are the best tools to achieve change in consumer habits, "adds Antonio Navarro.

For his part, Emilio Balleser pointed out that "the data presented correspond exclusively to the electric savings of schools, being necessary to include savings in water and fuel in the study so that the analysis of energy consumption is more complete.

Due to the methods of billing these supplies, your data can not be included in the quarterly analyzes. "

"If the school savings trend continues, he said, it is very likely that the positive impact of the 'Mi Cole Saving with Energy' project could be even greater when introducing this consumption information."

On the other hand, it is also important to note that the Sustainable Development Foundation foresees an increase in electricity savings in the coming quarters of 2018, coinciding with the implementation of activities designed to boost the protagonism of students in the energy savings of each educational center .

The project 'My Cole Saves with Energy' continues

'Mi Cole Saves with Energy' is a project that aims to boost savings, energy efficiency and reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in schools by raising awareness and participation of students, teachers and other agents that they participate in the educational community, for the learning of issues related to electric power, water, consumption habits and savings and energy efficiency.

Inspired by the 50/50 European initiative, the project rewards the initiative and motivation of the participating schools, proposing the municipal investment of 50% of the economic savings achieved by each educational center in improvements of the facilities and equipment thereof to influence in improving its energy efficiency.

The other 50% is invested in carrying out environmental education activities to increase the awareness and knowledge of the students of the center in matters of sustainability.

The initiative already has almost 10,000 students throughout the Region of Murcia.

For the school year 2018-2019 the project will begin to be implemented also in the rest of the Spanish Autonomous Communities.
