The University of Murcia changes plastic bottles for aluminum packaging to celebrate Environment Day (04/06/2018)

The University of Murcia wants to celebrate the World Environment Day by contributing to the worldwide initiative 'No pollution by plastics' and will do so by setting an example and trying to make the members of the university community accumulate less plastics.

Throughout the morning the students and the staff of the University will be able to approach the two points that Campus Sostenible will install in La Merced and Espinardo and exchange their plastic bottles for other aluminum ones, and the same can be done with the bags.

Those who join this initiative can get an aluminum bottle for every ten plastic bottles that they provide and a bag of cloth for every ten plastic bags they deposit.

Each person can take up to three bottles and three reusable bags thanks to their collaboration.

To participate, you must present the university card.

The caravans of the Sustainable Campus will be located in La Merced and in the Giner of the Rivers of the Espinardo Campus, from 10:00 to 14:00 hours.

In addition, all those who post a photo on social networks (Facebook or Twitter) at the time of the change mentioning Sustainable Campus can get an organic farming plant.

With all the material received the University of Murcia will do a work that reflects the impact generated by our plastic waste and invites reflection on the pollution associated with this model of consumption.

The University of Murcia is sensitive to environmental problems on a global scale and for years has been working through its integrated management system Sustainable Campus, trying to reduce the environmental impact of its activity, acting as a social reference and sensitizing the university community and the local society

Excess plastic, a global problem

One of the most important environmental challenges worldwide is the contamination by plastics of our planet.

The current production and consumption model causes more plastic waste than we are capable of assimilating, which causes serious negative effects on our natural resources and our health: in the next 10-15 years, world plastic production will double.

Avoiding the worst of these results requires a complete rethinking of the current system and moving towards a sustainable and responsible model with the environment.

# SinContaminación for plastics, the theme chosen by the UN for the World Environment Day 2018, is a call to action for us to mobilize together.

The subject invites us to consider what changes we can make in our daily lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastics pollution to nature, wildlife and our own health.

While plastic has many valuable uses, we have become dependent on single-use or disposable plastic, with serious environmental consequences.
