Presentation of the book 'Tetraclinis articulata: biogeography, ecology, threats and conservation' (04/06/2018)

This afternoon at 7:00 pm, in the Hemicycle of Letters of the Campus of La Merced, as a prelude to World Environment Day, the presentation of the book Tetraclinis articulata: biogeography, ecology, threats and conservation will take place.

In this collective work, written by 10 experts under the direction of Miguel Angel Esteve Selma, professor of Ecology at the University of Murcia, an excellent description is made of the North African forests of Tetraclinis, a species of evergreen conifer of the family of cypress, and the biogeographical origin of those present in the Iberian Peninsula.

On the other hand, a large part of this work is devoted to the elaboration of a detailed diagnosis of the ecology, the threats (excessive grazing, fires, urban planning, climate change) and the degree of conservation of the main European Tetraclinis formations located in the Southeast Iberian.

According to Esteve, "this diagnosis will serve in the immediate future for the drafting of the conservation plan for these unique open forests of the coastal semi-arid sierras of the Region of Murcia, one of the main Iberian contributions to the European Natura 2000 Network".

The publication is framed within the LIFE-Tetraclinis-EUROPA Project, whose main purpose is to improve the conservation status and long-term sustainability of the priority habitats of Tetraclinis articulata forests.

Among the specific objectives to achieve this is the reduction of threats created by the anthropogenic impact on the species and its habitat, fight against the loss of genetic diversity, combat genetic erosion, reconcile the habitat conservation of Tetraclinis articulata through the grazing in areas where this species develops in the Region of Murcia, regulate public use in areas with presence of the species habitat and develop a monitoring program on the habitat, other species that depend on these habitats and the environmental parameters that determine its reproduction and growth.
