The `Life Clean Up' project manages to eliminate more than 80% of pollutants such as antibiotics and anti-inflammatories from wastewater (31/05/2018)

The UCAM researchers, led by Dr. José Antonio Gabaldón, and the partners of the Life Regenera Levante project, CTC, Hidrogea, Hidrotec, University of Bari and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, advance results on studies with cyclodextrins, photocatalysis and pulses from light, for wastewater cleaning

The latest studies carried out by the researchers of the REM Group, involved in the European Life Clean Up project, have initiated water cleaning processes with a representation of the most detected drugs in the list of emerging pollutants in this sector.

During the experimental tests with cyclodextrin polymers and advanced oxidation processes, developed in recent months by the partners of the European project, it has been possible to eliminate a high percentage of waste present in the waters as: anti-inflammatories and analgesics (ketoprofen 99.9% , ibuprofen 85%, diclofenac 99.9%, paracetamol 80%);

antibiotics (ciprofloxacin 99.9%, clarithromycin 86%) or antidepressants (paroxetine 98%).

Likewise, among the most abundant chemical components analyzed in polluted waters, the presence of chloroform (xx%) and clopirifos (xx%) was highlighted.

The five partners of the Region of Murcia involved in the European project `Life Clean Up ': UCAM, Regenera Levante, CTC, Hidrogea and Hidrotec, and the two Italians, University of Bari and Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, have met at the facilities from the Catholic University to share the latest results obtained in the last months of work that have resulted in the installation of a first prototype, designed by the Hidrotec company, for the team of the UCAM led by Dr. José Antonio Gabaldón , coordinator of the European project, can continue working on the elimination of pollutants in continuous.

In addition, we have verified the data previously obtained on absorption, and we have highlighted very positive figures on the processes of desorption of polluting compounds of polymers, around 80%.

On the other hand, researchers have announced the future lines of action to work with new compounds as phytosanitary, and the Murcian company of water treatment, Hidrotec, has announced the prompt implementation of a chemical reactor for the manufacture of polymer cyclodextrins that will allow manufacture the necessary volume of cyclodextrins in order to carry out the necessary industrial tests for the cleaning of wastewater.

The European Life Clean Up project, which the UCAM leads through the International Projects Office (OPRI), is co-financed by the EU, through the LIFE program, with a total budget of € 1,492,512.
