The four working groups - Social, Urban, Cultural and Trade and Employment - will analyze and will decide the improvement actions that the neighborhood will benefit from

A total of 74 associations and social groups from the neighborhood of El Carmen were called today to participate in the first working meeting with which the participatory process of the Urban DNA initiative begins, which aims to revitalize and reactivate this historic neighborhood of the center of Murcia, with the direct involvement of the neighbors.

The Councilor for Infrastructure, Public Works and Services, Rebeca Pérez, together with the president of the Municipal Board, Ignacio García, and members of the Municipal Corporation, attended this meeting in which the four working groups were set up to analyze and decide on improvement actions that the neighborhood will benefit from: Mesa Social, Mesa Urbana, Mesa Cultural and the Mesa de Comercio y Empleo.

The neighbors have known firsthand the DNA initiative and the set of measures that make up the participation process that will take place this June, among which are open agoras in public spaces, children's activities to collect the proposals of the smallest and 'urban mappings', that is, routes to identify the problems of the neighborhood.

Each work table is chaired by a municipal official specialized in the area and has the presence of the heads of municipal service of each department, staff of the Observatory of Employment and Economy of Murcia (La Asomada), members of the Municipal Board and the own neighborhood collectives.

The entire participation process for the preparation and selection of improvement actions will be supervised by Asomada and the University of Murcia.

In addition to the tables, a specific work group will be set up for the burial, with which the 20,000 residents of El Carmen will be able to decide what to allocate the thousands of square meters that will be released with the elimination of the train tracks on the surface, recovering a public space that will have new gardens and pedestrian avenues.

Four phases

After the constitution of the different Work Tables within the Participation phase, the neighbors will be able to identify the main problems of the neighborhood and propose their ideas, suggestions and improvements, through the different associations and collectives.

In the Activation Phase the selected projects will be technically defined and, at the beginning of 2019, the Agitation Phase will begin, with the entry of hundreds of workers and the execution of the improvement actions, which will take place between February and March of next year.

With the Projection Phase, the project will conclude and all the actions will be monitored.

This project will be co-financed by 80% by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) of the European Union, within the framework of the Operational Program for Sustainable Growth 2014-2020, and foreseen in the Murcia Project.
