Murcia now proposes measures to prevent the rise of gambling and betting causes problems in children and young people (30/05/2018)

Murcia now presents a series of measures "to address this situation, so that the municipality is controlled and is vigilant." The Consistory must pay special attention to the location of these gambling and gambling venues and conduct awareness campaigns to prevent problems of addictions and gambling, especially among the younger population "

NOW MURCIA proposes measures at local, regional and state level to prevent the rise of gambling and betting causes problems in the population, especially among young people.

The municipal training will present a motion in the plenary session of tomorrow in which it faces the situation that we live in our country and in our municipality in recent years, "in which we have witnessed an exponential increase in betting houses and an intensification of the advertising related to this business that represent a risk factor for the increase of gambling addiction, as witnessed by official reports and associations affected by the game. "

As councilor Alicia Morales explains, "this exposure to gambling and bets to which it is subjected without filters to both adults and young people and minors tends to normalize the activity of gambling and bets in a dangerous way and at unknown levels to date. "

Morales highlights "the large increase in the number of this type of premises in the municipality, which in many cases located near schools and centers where minors and young people go."

Given this situation Now Murcia presents a series of measures "to deal with, so that the municipality is controlled and is vigilant."

For the mayor, the Consistory must pay special attention "to the location of these gambling and gambling venues and carry out awareness campaigns to prevent problems of addictions and gambling, especially among the younger population."

The spokeswoman for Murcia now notes that "data from June 2017 accounted for 307 gambling venues in the Region, placing it at the top in the number of betting centers" and warns that these spaces "attract very young customers who are unaware of doing an activity that, if not practiced with responsibility, can end up leading to an addiction. "

For Morales, "it is important that from the public administrations a reality is addressed with determination that can lead to a major social problem".

The mayor emphasizes that the legislation on gambling in the Autonomous Community "has

more than 23 years and, in spite of having been modified later, it has been clearly overcome by the new situation described ".

"Neither has the presence of publicity of this type of business been regulated on the radio or on public television," he warns, "nor are protocols designed to accelerate the access of affected people to specific health resources."

The councilor adds that "the support of public administrations to associations that receive people with disorders derived from gambling is meager, while these associations see an exponential growth in the number of users they serve".

Therefore, now Murcia proposes a battery of measures, most of which, if the motion is approved, must be transmitted by the City Council to the Autonomous Community and the central government, "who are those who have much of the competences ".

However, from the Consistory itself should be "study and implement, through the Department of Health, educational campaigns and awareness of the risks to young people of gambling or betting."

The Murcia Now motion establishes that the City Council urges the regional government to amend Law 2/1995, of March 15, regulating gambling and betting in the Region to incorporate measures such as the development of a regional strategy for the prevention of gambling addiction, the elimination of commercial communication of sports bets and the commercial communication of games of chance or betting during children's hours, or the elaboration of a regulation of the implementation of gambling halls that prevents their concentration or installation in places of special risk for its proximity to therapy centers for gamblers, schools or secondary education, health centers, sports facilities, etc.

For its part, the Ministry of Health, according to the content of the motion of Ahora Murcia, should develop a Plan for Inspection in Addictions, among other actions.

Finally, the City of Murcia, if approved the motion, will have to urge the Government of Spain to introduce measures such as various improvements in the advertising of gaming activities or establish as mandatory the messages of prevention and prudence in portals' on line ', as well as in the places where bets are made in a visible and notorious way.
