Professor Juan José Vera Martínez, elected new UMU University Advocate (30/05/2018)

In a meeting of the Claustro of the University of Murcia that lasted until 21:30 hours, was chosen yesterday new Defender of the University professor of Psychology Juan José Vera Martínez.

The election took place in the second round, since in the first round the necessary majority was not reached.

Vera Martinez obtained 109 votes for 95 from Domingo Antonio Manzanares Martínez, obtaining 73 and 71 votes respectively in the second vote.

Both candidates highlighted the excellent work done during all this time by the up to now University Defender, Professor José Palazón.

In her speech to the cloister, Vera Martínez highlighted her 15-year career explaining conflict management, and said that, from this experience, she will use mediation and conciliation as fundamental principles to avoid the escalation of conflicts.

Communication, empathy, emotional skills and emotional intelligence should be, in his opinion, fundamental tools in their work.

He added that the University Ombudsman has to maintain relations with all instances of the university, and that its role is not to replace authority, but to accompany and detect inconsistencies, preventing the freedoms of a member of the community to become an attack to the rights of another person.

He finally stated that "we can not have another concept of the university than that of people who are in the same boat, who have a common destiny, who are needed to survive, and who can disagree on how to do it, but without that union it is possible to achieve success in the smooth running of the university. "

In the same session of the Cloister of the University of Murcia, the proposal for an initiative to reform the Statutes of the University of Murcia, presented by the Rector José Luján, was approved by the attendees and the members who composed different university commissions, such as those of Quality, of claims of positions of contracted professors, of the civil servants of the university educational bodies, of Academic Distinctions and the Legal Commission, as well as to the representatives of the Senate in the Council of Government.

The Senate voted in favor of a declaration in relation to the scientific advisory committee of the Mar Menor in which "its absolute support" was made public to all the technical and scientific members of that committee, and it was advocated that its technical assessment be considered a "level of prevalence over other opinions not formed or purely scientific", setting out the desire that society and its representatives value scientific research and knowledge "as fundamental elements and agents for the progress and well-being of our society".

Finally, there was an institutional declaration in which the concern of the Senate was made public by the social alarm generated after the ruling of the Provincial Court of Navarre in what is known as the La Manada trial, in which it was stated that the University "assumes the commitment to continue promoting inclusive education, based on the principle of equality between men and women, as a means to achieve a cessation of violence and killings against women.
