Change Murcia denounces the lack of foresight of the municipal government in the application of the Data Protection Regulation (28/05/2018)

Murcia change has reported today that the mayor's office warned the people who hold the leadership of municipal services of the application of the General Data Protection Regulation only 24 hours before its entry into force on May 25, although the Adaptation of this European regulation requires extensive preparation work, since it involves contacting all users for whom the City Council has data.

For the spokesman of the municipal group, Nacho Tornel, it is "surprising" that the local government has not foreseen sufficiently in advance the application of this regulation in the Town Hall, if one takes into account that it was known to start the same this month , and waited until May 24 to send a three-page notification that included an example of a general instance on paper to the heads of municipal services.

In this regard, Tornel explained that other Spanish consistories such as Malaga have spent months working on the application of the Regulation, collecting data and adapting forms with the different municipal areas, agencies and companies. According to the aforementioned notification, "consequence of adaptation of the Regulation will be that all the services that collect personal data will have to adapt the writings in which they request the consent of the citizens to the new Regulation ".

It also points out that as of its entry into force, tacit consents will not be accepted, that is, those based on the inaction of the persons affected, but a written declaration or the marking of boxes on a website will be necessary.

Tornel has called attention to the number of users of municipal programs and activities whose data should be protected from May 25, and that "on that date the services did not even have the forms to proceed with the protection".

"Therefore, the short time that the Mayor has reported makes it impossible to adapt in a timely manner, which incurs an irresponsibility of the government team that, in addition to causing stress for municipal staff, makes the City Council subject of sanction by the EU, "Tornel added.
