The UMU and the UPCT host the Conference on industrial heritage in the Region of Murcia (28/05/2018)

On the occasion of the commemoration of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the University of Murcia collaborates with the Sierra Minera Foundation and the Directorate General of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of the Region of Murcia to hold a conference on industrial heritage of the Region of Murcia, which will take place from May 29 to 31.

The conference aims to enable a broad and rigorous social, technical and academic debate on how to advance in the protection, conservation and recovery of the heritage and industrial landscapes of the Region of Murcia.

The sessions will begin the afternoon of May 29 in the Hemicycle of the Faculty of Letters of the UMU with an inaugural lecture on lights and shadows of industrial heritage in Spain and Europe, which will be borne by Julián Sobrino Simal, professor at the University of Sevilla.

Subsequently, on May 30 and 31, the headquarters of the activities will be transferred to the Polytechnic University of Cartagena, specifically to the ETS of Architecture and Building, where the present and future of industrial and mining heritage in Spain will be addressed, as well as in Europe.

Next we will analyze the industrial heritage in the Region of Murcia and, in particular, the mining heritage of Mazarrón, the industrial landscape of the Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Unión, the Arsenal de Cartagena, the pier of El Hornillo in Águilas and the facilities salineras of the region, as well as the identification and valuation of industrial heritage from the classrooms.

The two working sessions at the Architecture ETS of Cartagena will be complemented with a visit to the industrial heritage of the Sierra Minera de Cartagena-La Union, which will take place on May 31 in the morning. Finally, a photographic exhibition has been scheduled on the industrial heritage of the Region of Murcia, which will be inaugurated on the same day as the start of the Conference in the cloister of the UMU Law School and which may be visited until June 15.
