Classic and universal protagonists in the new talk of the UMU: the tapestries of the spinners and Ovidio (25/05/2018)

On May 28th at 7:30 p.m., there will be a conference entitled 'The Spinners and Metamorphoses of Ovidio', by researchers from the University of Murcia (UMU) Rosa María Iglesias Montiel and María Consuelo Álvarez Morán.

It is part of the cycle 'The UMU and the scientific culture' that the Scientific Culture Unit has been holding since May of last year.

In 2017, the 2,000th anniversary of the death of Ovidio, author of classical antiquity with greater influence on literature and the arts, both in content and form, was fulfilled.

In this new talk the professors of Latin Philology will illustrate how the stories of the 'Metamorphoses' are intertwined by procedures similar to those that the spinners use to mix weft and warp in their tapestries.

In particular, the professors of Latin Philology highlight as more significant episodes the competition between Arachne and Minerva, symbol of the new and old poetic composition;

and the embroidery of Filomela, symbol of the woman harassed and raped, but who is capable of denouncing.

Iglesias Montiel and Álvarez Morán are an international benchmark in the literary and mythological analysis of Ovid's 'Metamorphoses' and the survival of classical mythology in literature and music.

The event will take place in the Cultural Area Room of El Corte Inglés, admission is free until full capacity is reached.
