Rector Luján before representatives of the regional PSOE: "The UMU must have the institutional and economic support it needs" (23/05/2018)

Several representatives of the PSOE of the Region of Murcia have made this morning a visit to the Rector of the University of Murcia, where they have dealt with the Rector José Luján on various topics related to teaching and research.

The visit was attended by Diego Conesa, General Secretary of PSRM-PSO and Gloria Alarcón, Deputy Secretary-General and Secretary of Economy, Gender Equality and Public Policy of PSRM-PSOE, as well as regional deputies Joaquín López Pagán and Ángel Rafael Martínez Lorente .

The visit is part of a round of talks between the new Rector of the UMU and the representatives of the different political parties, which has already begun with Citizens and the Popular Party, and which will end next Monday with representatives of Podemos.

The objective, as Rector Luján said, is to inform the political parties of the government program of his team, which took office a month ago, as well as various measures to improve the functions developed by the university, both in the teaching field , as research and knowledge transfer.

"With all of them we are discussing measures of our government action that we believe are key to the training we want to give at the University of Murcia and in which we must necessarily have the understanding and support of the different political parties."

The Rector referred to the Scholarship policy and the public price for tuition, and commented that one of the objectives of his team, included in one of the points of his government program, is the equalization of the price of master's degrees with that of the degrees: "The extra cost that currently have the master's degrees become an obstacle to the natural continuity of university studies," he said.

He also spoke of the need to improve the scholarship policy, and assured that this is something that has to do with regional policy but also with the state.

"We are a public university that serves the Region of Murcia, which is justified by all that it can contribute as economic, social and cultural development to the Region, and as a great bet of the regional political system." For all these reasons, the University of Murcia It must have the institutional and economic support it needs, "he said, adding that" if we want to develop an important action of research and knowledge transfer, we also need to equip ourselves with infrastructures, laboratories, etc., and have a staff of researchers who are capable of to take the projects forward. "

For his part, Diego Conesa commented that "We gladly accept the invitation of Rector Luján because in the Socialist Party we consider that the public universities of the Region are very important to generate equal opportunities among young people in the face of their future."

"The main obstacle of our region," he added, "is inequality, and the public university is a fundamental element to ensure that this gap does not increase and that there is equal opportunity for all young people."

He referred to the importance of helping members of single-parent families and children of mothers victims of gender violence ... "We want them to have more support than they currently have, and we have raised that in the Regional Assembly and we want to transmit it to the Rector "

"We want to deepen a consensus so that there is more support for the public university, because we believe that its future will be the future of the Region of Murcia."
