The UCAM, above the national average in women with positions of responsibility in research (18/05/2018)

50% of the doctoral theses that are read in Spain are of women, surpassing the European average (47%).

Spanish private universities have 43% of professorships, and public universities with 21%.

The Secretary of State for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela, opened this morning the 'IV Conference on Research and Doctorate: Woman in science', organized by the UCAM, focused this year on the importance of women in the scientific field and researcher.

As a good example of this, at the presidential table along with the Minister of Universities, Javier Celdrán, there were three women, for their positions of responsibility: the rector of the UCAM, Josefina García;

the Vice-Rector for Research, Estrella Núñez, and the Secretary of State.

During the conference, the commitment of the UCAM to face the great challenges of today's society was highlighted: aging of the population, climate change and pollution, social inequality and digital transformation.

During the event, the rector has highlighted the strategy of the UCAM, led by its president, José Luis Mendoza, commitment to excellence and university quality regardless of sex, and the consequence is that currently women are the majority in the positions of responsibility.

He also expressed his satisfaction with the results that are being obtained from the Vice-Rector for Research, headed by Estrella Núñez, many of whose research groups are represented by women.

And is that "Men and women, all together, should be the line of work to follow to advance society," he concluded.

Secretary of State Carmen Vela explained that in order to do quality research and innovation, everyone's skills are needed, so that the skills of 51% of the population, represented by women, can not be left out, contributing to days like this one. true equality regime.

He also stressed that Spain must advance to achieve equality between both sexes in the workplace, levels that have not worsened during the crisis, being times in which the figure of women has always been dispensed with in order to continue in the position, the certain thing is that "we are not fulfilling everything that we should have.We have to foment in the entities the plans of equality to continue improving".

More than two hundred researchers participate today in the different activities of dissemination of science that the Vice-Rector for Research has prepared in one of its initiatives aimed at awakening the scientific vocation among young people.

In this sense, Javier Celdrán, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, has announced that: "From the Government of the Region we will continue working and collaborating with the UCAM in all areas, but especially in the environment of innovation and research, with subsidy and promotion programs to awaken scientific-technical vocations, so that we continue to grow companies and therefore the business fabric of the Region. "

During the inaugural session the good work of the UCAM has been pointed out in national and European research projects, where recently this university has won calls that will make it manage more than 15 million euros of European funds, taking advantage of Estrella Núñez to announce the obtaining of a new project in the area of ​​health, food and sports.

In this sense, Camen Vela has encouraged all the researchers present to participate in these calls, since Spain is leading large projects in such important frameworks as the H2020 calls.
