A student of the UMU receives an AMGEN scholarship to research at the University of Cambridge (17/05/2018)

Pilar Moreno will be transferred this summer to the Addenbrooke's hospital laboratory in Cambridge, where she will investigate, together with Cristina Pina, of the Department of Hematology, about acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of cancer produced in leukocyte cells.

Compared to normal tissues, many types of cancer exhibit a dependence on methionine to proliferate and survive.

In one of the latest studies conducted in this laboratory and directed by Pina, they identified the enzyme MAT2A, responsible for the conversion of this methionine to the universal donor of methyl groups S-adenosyl-methionine (SAM), as a possible vulnerability for AML.

Thus, the objectives of the program in which the aforementioned student will participate include defining the methionine requirements during the transformation of the AML cells in the mouse, checking the methionine dependence in cell cultures with AML, and observing the consequences of methylation global after eliminating methionine.

All this will be possible through the use of the CRISPR system.

"We benefit from a strong interdisciplinary network of collaborators, both local and external to Cambridge, and we are always excited to listen to talented people who are interested in joining our research efforts," says Cristina Pina.

"I want to thank Fátima Morales, for helping me so much, and Cristina Pina and AMGEN for giving me this opportunity.

I know that these two months will take effort and dedication, but to be able to investigate in the cancer area, to which I want to focus my future, is an experience for which I am completely grateful.

I hope to learn about leukemia and learn new techniques and how they work.

I'm sure I'll be much more excited to continue in this line of scientific research, "says the student.

Each year, 100 students can benefit from these scholarships through the Amgen Scholars Europe program, with which they have the opportunity to participate in investigations of European and Japanese institutions, such as the Pasteur Institute in Paris.

With these scholarships you will have the opportunity to work in some of the best universities in the world
