The Ministry of Culture has agreed to initiate the file of modification of the Asset of Cultural Interest, after the request made by HUERMUR in 2016 and the investigation initiated by the Ombudsman after the delays of the file.
The file that now begins recognizes the surroundings of the Sanctuary from the Cresta del Gallo to the road from Santo Ángel to Algezares, including also the Santa Fountain, the convents, the Casa del Labrador, the Casa del Cabildo, the Summer Seminar, the slopes of ascent, the Way of the Cross and the Rosary.
The treasure of the Virgin and her trousseau are protected in this file, which also recognizes the BIC's images of the Virgen de la Fuensanta y el Niño, the half moon, the throne, as well as the artistic ensemble of the works carried out as BIC members. for the sanctuary by Pedro Flores, González Moreno, Antonio Carrión and Nicolás Prados.
The Association for the Conservation of the Garden and Heritage of Murcia, HUERMUR, has achieved the initiation of the modification file of the National Monument of the Sanctuary of the Fuensanta, for its adaptation to the current legislation as an Asset of Cultural Interest, and the processing of your necessary protection environment.
HUERMUR requested two years ago, in May 2016, the modification of this BIC, as recognized by the Resolution of the Directorate General of Cultural Assets of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.
Although the Law of Cultural Heritage of the Region of Murcia marks that the deadline to agree on the start of the process is 6 months, it has not been until now when the necessary order of initiation has been signed.
That is why the resolution of the CARM recognizes that the protection of the environment goes back to November 10, 2016, starting on that date due to administrative silence.
This lack of express response and the actual start of the procedure led HUERMUR to denounce this situation before the Ombudsman, who initiated an investigation recently, as announced by the conservationist association.
From the association HUERMUR stands out the importance of the procedure that has known since the protection of the good of cultural interest extends to his geographical surroundings, that is delimited according to the plane included in the file, as well as to the integral parts of the monument, belongings and accessories, intangible assets and movable property that comprises and constitute an essential part of its history.
The description included in the opening of the file includes the elements built around the Fuensanta Sanctuary that are protected from this moment, such as the Santa Fountain itself, the Comic Cave, the Casa del Labrador, the Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites , the Summer Seminar, the accesses and banks, the Via Crucis, the Rosary, as well as the route of the Real Cañada de Torreagüera that crosses the surroundings.
Regarding the environment of the Sanctuary, the file expressly states that "it is important to consider the area as a cultural landscape worthy of being protected as established by the instrument of Ratification of the European Landscape Convention".

The association HUERMUR celebrates that the initiation of this application presented in 2016 gives maximum protection to the artistic ensemble of the Sanctuary of the Fuensanta, starting with the image of the Virgin, Patroness of Murcia, which is under the protection of the BIC, as well as the image of the Child Jesus, the half moon, the throne, and the outstanding artistic elements that adorn the Shrine since the mid-twentieth century.
From HUERMUR point out that "it is a great pride for all Murcia that the great legacy of pictorial, sculptural and magnificent altarpieces have finally the maximum protection expressly allowed by law," since "the legacy that involves the works by Pedro Flores, González Moreno, Antonio Carrión and Nicolás Prados is a unique ensemble that should be highlighted in the protection of the monument, as well as other historical pieces, such as paintings from the 18th century ".
Equally noteworthy is the reference to the trousseau of more than 20 cloaks, and to the treasure of the Virgin guarded in the Museum of the Cathedral, including the pieces recently recovered by the Civil Guard and those that are still missing, which are expressly protected in the opening .
Finally, from the association HUERMUR hope that this file does not suffer further delays and that public administrations present all their collaboration to get the early declaration of the BIC of the Fuensanta and that their surroundings are definitely protected so that "all Murcia feel as their own , a unique, unique and fundamental landscape for the Huerta de Murcia ".
