Murcia counts today with five favorite sons (12/05/2018)

The Mayor, accompanied by councilors of the Municipal Corporation, has delivered this morning at the Almudí Palace the titles of Favorite Son to Alejandro Valverde, Francisco Salzillo, Andrés Hernández Ros, José María Falgas and Ángel Belmonte.

The act, which has been enlivened by the Orfeón Fernández Caballero and the Jota Martínez Ensemble Group and which has been broadcast in streaming, has been attended by the Minister of the Presidency, the Bishop, regional and national deputies, senators, the rector of the UMU, mayors Preachers, members of the City Council, consular corps, professional associations, associations of the city and political, social, neighborhood and cultural representatives of the municipality.

In this way, Murcia has five new Favorite Children whose titles have been delivered in an act attended by more than 300 people.

The City Council has recognized the link of the cyclist Alejandro Valverde with the municipality of Murcia, where he was born on April 25, 1980. Since his debut as a professional in 2002, has always been an example of sportsmanship, improvement and team awareness.

Throughout these years, Valverde has been an ambassador of Murcia, since his land has always been present in every title, interview or event of which he has been the protagonist.

The painter José María Falgas Rigal was born in 1929 in the popular street of San Antonio, since he painted his first oil painting in 1945, he has been an ambassador of his land, which he has masterfully reproduced in oils and watercolors, which has placed him as one of the most recognized Murcian artists of the XX and XXI century.

Andrés Hernández Ros, was born in 1948 in the hamlet of La Galapacha, belonging to the district of Guadalupe.

Deceased in 2016, he was the promoter of the Murcia Statute of Autonomy and regional head of government between 1982 and 1984.

Francisco Salzillo y Alcaraz, born in Murcia on May 12, 1707, was a Spanish baroque sculptor, considered the most representative Spanish 18th century image maker and one of the greatest Baroque sculptors.

His work extends throughout the ancient Kingdom of Murcia.

With regard to Angel Belmonte, the City of Murcia recognizes its connection and selfless collaboration in the celebrations of the municipality and its impetus in the Christmas celebrations around the figure of Santa Claus, which has represented for years.

He has also collaborated with the Federation of Moors and Christians, contributing material and playing the role of Ambassador Moro, as well as having founded the Kábila Ibn-Arabien 1983.

The delivery of Honors and Distinctions is the central act of the commemoration of the foundation of the Council of Murcia, medieval antecedent of the current City Council, by King Alfonso X el Sabio on May 14, 1266.
