The City Council organizes various activities to commemorate the Day of the City (11/05/2018)

The City of Murcia has scheduled various activities to celebrate the Day of the City, next Monday May 14, when it commemorates the delivery by Alfonso X the Wise of the privilege that constituted the Council of Murcia.

In addition to the institutional ceremony of Honors and Distinctions, which takes place on Saturday at 12 noon at the Almudí Palace, this afternoon, at 7:00 pm, the discovery of the Nicolás Salzillo Street plaque and the act of Jura will take place. of the Flag of next Saturday, May 19.

To all of them there are different performances to be held on Monday in order that Murcia feel identified with this date.

At 6.30 pm, at the door of the Church of Santa Eulalia, the free guided tour "Hebrews, Christians and Islamic in Medina Mursiya" will begin, a 2-hour tour that will reveal the day to day in an intercultural coexistence and that will show different sites to know where the synagogue and the old Jewish quarter were located, the archaeological remains of two mosques and a maqbara, or the oldest Christian temple in the historic quarter known as Pasos de Santiago.

To attend, it is not necessary to register.

In the afternoon, three actors of the Congañía Las Monstruas, dressed as Alfonso X el Sabio, Jaime I and Violante de Aragón, will perform microtheater shows in different streets of the historic center (Glorieta, Plaza de la Cruz, Santo Domingo, Romea, San Bartolomé and Plaza de las Flores), from 18 to 20 hours, explaining the importance for Murcia of their figures and distributing to pedestrians the rolled privilege that King Alfonso X the Wise granted, on May 14, 1266 to the city of Murcia by which the Council is constituted as the governing body of the city.

From Monday and throughout the week Murcia will be able to participate by social networks (by Twitter naming @AytoMurcia, on Facebook to 'Ayuntamiento de Murcia' and on Instagram @ @ ayuntamientodemurcia) in the contest # Día deMurcia, sharing images of their favorite spots of the city with this label.

Likewise, the building annexed to the Town Hall, the Manterola footbridge, and the river bed will be illuminated in red color, the color of the city's flag.

Delivery of Honors and Distinctions

The City Council will hold tomorrow morning, at 12 noon, the institutional events organized to mark the Day of Murcia, coinciding with the anniversary of the Council.

The Hall of Columns of the Almudí Palace will be the scene of the event, which will proceed to the official award of Honors and Distinctions of the City.

Thus, Cyclist Alejandro Valverde, the sculptor Francisco Salzillo, the first president of the Autonomous Community, Andrés Hernández Ros, the painter José María Falgas and the philanthropist and businessman Ángel Belmonte will be named Favorite Son of the City.

Also this afternoon, at 7:00 pm, the Mayor and members of the Municipal Corporation will discover the plaque that gives name to the street Sculptor Nicolás Salzillo (former Sculptor Salzillo street), thus making a tribute to the father of the famous Murcian sculptor Francisco Salzillo.

The institutional act, chaired by the Mayor and with the assistance of the members of the Corporation, will act the Orfeón Fernández Caballero and Grupo Jota Martínez Ensemble that will interpret cantigas.

On the other hand, the event may be followed through the Mayor's YouTube channel, where it will be broadcast live.

The City Council has recognized the link of the cyclist Alejandro Valverde with the municipality of Murcia, where he was born on April 25, 1980. Since his debut as a professional in 2002, has always been an example of sportsmanship, improvement and team awareness.

Throughout these years, Valverde has been an ambassador of Murcia, since his land has always been present in every title, interview or event of which he has been the protagonist.

The painter José María Falgas Rigal was born in 1929 in the popular street of San Antonio, since he painted his first oil painting in 1945, he has been an ambassador of his land, which he has masterfully reproduced in oils and watercolors, which has placed him as one of the most recognized Murcian artists of the XX and XXI century.

Andrés Hernández Ros, was born in 1948 in the hamlet of La Galapacha, belonging to the district of Guadalupe.

Deceased in 2016, he was the promoter of the Murcia Statute of Autonomy and regional head of government between 1982 and 1984.

With regard to Angel Belmonte, the City of Murcia recognizes its connection and selfless collaboration in the celebrations of the municipality and its impetus in the Christmas celebrations around the figure of Santa Claus, which has represented for years.

He has also collaborated with the Federation of Moors and Christians, contributing material and playing the role of Ambassador Moro, as well as having founded the Kábila Ibn-Arabien 1983.
