The Cemetery of Our Father of Jesus of Espinardo will have 310 new double pits and 12 plots for pantheons in zone 5. The Governing Board of the City of Murcia has awarded the works for the basic project to the commercial Construcciones Juan Gregorio, SL
It is an initiative promoted by the Department of Sports and Health, directed by Felipe Coello, and which will have a total budget of 358,494 euros.
The cemetery of Nuestro Padre Jesús currently has around 170,000 inhumations, more than 800 cemeteries and more than 20,000 graves, in addition to 5,000 niches and 560 columbariums.
Annually they are carried out around 1,200 annual burials.
History of the Cemetery
The neoclassical municipal cemetery.
The main façade, from 1894, is the work of the municipal architect Pedro Celdrán.
Three years after raising it, the first official funeral would be celebrated.
The first cemetery had 100,000 square meters, while the current dimensions are exactly double.
A part of the current cemetery is destined to Al-maqbara-Muslim cemetery.
It is built in areas not blessed, since previously it was used as a suicide zone.
The first Muslim burial took place in 1998
Murcia, besides the cemetery Our Father Jesus, has 33 parochial cemeteries, of which the one of Lobosillo is the one of greater antiquity-ends of the XIX-.
They were mostly designed by Celdrán.
Until the end of 1700, funerals were carried out in the existing parish churches in the towns, but Carlos III took the cemeteries out of the towns for reasons of health, which caused many conflicts with the Church.
In 1796 the cemetery of the Puerta de Orihuela was inaugurated, which together with the one of La Albatalía served Murcia and the numerous burials caused by the plague.
