The University of Murcia analyzes on Friday the situation of the Mar Menor from a scientific perspective (10/05/2018)

The University of Murcia, through the chair of Water and Sustainability, held on Friday a day entitled 'A global view of the Mar Menor'.

The event aims to be a space for study and reflection on our most emblematic coastal space and to do it from a scientific and academic perspective, generating a peaceful forum for debate by experts, scholars or interested in the environmental problem surrounding this extraordinary coastal area.

During the day special attention will be paid to some less studied aspects of the lagoon, such as hydrological ones, as well as some of the influential factors of its current state.

The intention of the Chair of Water and Sustainability is to generate certain certainties and contribute from the strictly academic field to provide some more light on the situation of the Mar Menor.

The papers will be developed from 9 in the morning in the Classroom of Culture of Cajamurcia, in Murcia.

Attendance to the event is free until full capacity, although registration is required at the email catedradelagua@um.es

Emilio Custodio Gimena, member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, will be among the speakers. He will dedicate his lecture to talk about 'The essential role of groundwater in the wetlands. '

Ángel Pérez Ruzafa, professor of ecology at the University of Murcia, will also take part in the analysis of the environmental situation of the Mar Menor.

A round table will be held mid-morning under the title 'Hydrology and Hydrogeology of Campo de Cartagena', analyzing issues such as the operation of the aquifers of the region and their relationship with the Mar Menor, as well as the characteristics of the natural drainage system and agricultural.

Another of the round tables will revolve around the theme 'Pollutant processes of agricultural, urban and mining origin' and it will address issues such as the effect of mining in the watershed of the Mar Menor and the role of the agricultural sector in environmental recovery of the lagoon;

as well as the necessary actions to prevent urban wastewater from affecting the lagoon.

The inauguration of the day will take place at 9 o'clock in the morning at the Cajamurcia Culture Hall.

the Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Miguel Ángel del Amor;

Miguel Ángel Ródenas, president of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation;

and Teresa María Navarro Caballero, director of the Chair of Water and Sustainability at the UMU.
