The City Council will hold on Saturday the institutional events organized to mark the Day of Murcia, coinciding with the anniversary of the Council.

The Hall of Columns of the Almudí Palace will be the scene of the event, which will also proceed to the official award of Honors and Distinctions of the City to the Medical Association and to the Brotherhood of the Holy Christ of Refuge, who will receive the Gold Medal, José Sánchez Lozano, who will be named Adoptive Son, posthumously.

Also tomorrow, Friday, at 7:00 pm, the Mayor and members of the Municipal Corporation will discover the plaque that gives name to the Street Sculptor Nicolás Salzillo (former Street Sculptor Salzillo), thus making a tribute to the father of the famous Murcian sculptor Francisco Salzillo.

The Mayor, José Ballesta, expressed last year, on the occasion of the start of the acts of the 750th anniversary of the Council, the will to set up on May 14 on the Day of the City of Murcia, since "with this commemoration we celebrate your place highlighted in history and, above all, our long life as a people ".

The institutional act, chaired by the Mayor and with the assistance of the members of the Corporation, will begin with the interpretation of the Orfeón Fernández Caballero of "Coplas Murcianas", Manuel Massotti Littel, distinguished last year with the title of Favorite Son of Murcia .

Before and during the delivery of the honors of the City Council, the act will continue with the cantiga of "The Seven Gozos", by Eduardo Paniagua, specialist of the music of medieval Spain, recognized for his musical work on the Cantigas de Alfonso X and Andalusian music.

In this case, it is the first cantiga of the collection of 427 of the 4 preserved codices of the 13th century.

Then, the music will continue with the interpretation of the 2nd cantiga, "La Arreixaca de Murcia", which, with autobiographical nuances, describes the historical vicissitudes experienced by Alfonso X about the Mozarabic church of Santa María in Arrixaca de Murcia;

the 3rd, "The oath in Murcia", which details the miracle of Santa Maria in Murcia Christian by a man who gave to keep his money to another and this denied, swearing in false before the image of the Virgin;

and the 4th, "Los corsarios", which tells how Alfonso X hired boats from the Moorish allies of Almeria and Murcia to transport European merchants to settle in Cádiz and El Puerto de Santa María.

As is the norm in the institutional acts of the City Council, the act will conclude with the interpretation of the Anthem to Murcia by the Orfeón Fernández Caballero.

On the other hand, the event may be followed through the Mayor's YouTube channel, where it will be broadcast live.

750 years of the Council

Throughout this year, since May 2016, the City Council has organized an extensive program of cultural, institutional and social activities, on the occasion of the celebration of the 750th anniversary of the founding of the Council of Murcia.

They have been acts of national and international character, including music, conferences, exhibitions, gastronomy, chess tournaments, workshops, publications and contests of shorts and stories, among other proposals.

All this, to commemorate that on May 14, 1266, King Alfonso X granted Murcia the 'privilege filmed' (the Fuero de Sevilla), since then.
