The African community of Murcia will go out on Saturday to the streets to make known the reality of the sister continent, with a colorful parade (10/05/2018)

Workshops and music mark the agenda prepared by the Federation of African Associations of Murcia (FAAM) to commemorate the International Day of Africa that is celebrated on May 25 The City Council has reinforced collaboration with this group thanks to the call 'Education and Awareness for the development'

The Councilor for Social Rights and Development Cooperation, Conchita Ruiz, presented this morning, accompanied by the Director General of the European Union, External Action and Development Cooperation of the Autonomous Community Manuel Pleguezuelo, the activities scheduled for the celebration of the International Day of Africa that will be carried out from next Friday and that will conclude on May 25.

Mady Cisse Ba, the president of the Federation of African Associations of Murcia, was also present.

In this edition, a program has been prepared that will begin on Friday the 11th, at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Moneo Building, with a day of exchange of knowledge and experiences and that will have a first lecture on Pan-Africanism. and a round table in which the exchange of experiences for the consolidation and strengthening of African organizations will be discussed.

On Saturday the 12th there will be a parade through the center of Murcia that will leave the San Agustín square to reach the pergola of San Basilio and in which the member associations of the Federation will put the color and music to bring the public closer to the reality of the neighboring continent.

Once concluded, there will be a festive, cultural and musical meeting at the San Basilio Pergola until 10 pm with traditional games, performances, wrestling exhibitions and gastronomy.

The program of events will conclude on Thursday May 25 with the celebration of the International Day of Africa to be commemorated with the screening of the program "Utopia and reality: African independence (I)", which includes the films 'Sambiznaga', 'Touki Boku' and 'Xala'.

A whole set of acts that, as stated by Conchita Ruiz, "should help to promote the social integration of these people and associations to make known through intercultural activities the traditions and customs of other countries."

The collaboration of the City Council with the Federation of African Associations of Murcia began two years ago with the celebration of its first edition and in 2018 the Department has expanded this joint work with the project 'Africa lives in Murcia', subsidized by the call Education and Awareness for Development, which was born with the aim of creating a space for cultural expression and exchange of experiences and ideas between the African immigrant population and the rest of Murcia's citizens.

Its most visible activities are the commemoration of African Women's Day, last March, and now the International Day of Africa, presented today.

Objectives of the collaboration

Among the objectives that the Department of Social Rights and Development Cooperation shares with the Federation of African Associations of Murcia include:

- Involve the citizenship of the municipality of Murcia of the reality of the African immigrant collective in Murcia and Spain, while showing the city of Murcia the color and joy of life of its sister continent.

- Recognize the role of African women in their family and social aspects.

- Build bridges of dialogue and understanding between the immigrant community and the rest of the citizens.

- Promote tolerance and respect towards immigrants among Primary Education students.

- Direct the attention of the citizens, development organizations and local authorities towards the most needy places of help in Africa, paying particular attention to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals advocated by the United Nations Organization.

- Strengthen the social capital with which the Federation has to be able to use it as an instrument of change.

FAAM purposes

The purpose of the federation is the fight for the full participation and inclusion of immigrants in Murcia society, with all the rights and duties, for a better use of resources in order to ensure a decent and decent life on an equal footing. his offspring.

- Association of Residents of The Gambia in Spain.

- Union of Ivorians of the Region of Murcia.

- Association of Citizens of Burkina Faso of the Region of Murcia.

- Association of United Ghanaian Immigrants of Murcia (AIGU).

- Association of Women with Africa (AMÁFRICA).

Africans in Murcia

In the municipality of Murcia there are currently around 15,000 people of African nationalities, of whom 3,000 come from sub-Saharan Africa.

This population is the youngest, compared to the rest of the nationalities, with an average age of 31 years, compared to the general average of 43 years.

Collaborating with the Federation of African Associations in Murcia means coming into direct contact with women and men from Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, The Gambia, Ghana, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria and Senegal and other African countries, who want, as the slogan says this year, a United Africa, and they carry it out by creating a solidary meeting space, formalizing a relationship that naturally existed in the African community in Murcia and that wants to share with the whole society
