- Alicia Morales states that "the administrations, in this case the City Council, have a very important role when it comes to combating the patriarchal and machista parameters that still exist in many aspects of our society, including this one"

NOW MURCIA has found that only one woman has been distinguished by the City of Murcia in the 181 years of delivery of its highest awards, so it considers necessary that all municipal groups "we are aware of this and begin to change the situation, so that in the coming years there will be a greater presence that recognizes and helps to make visible the work of women ".

Alicia Morales affirms that "it is very positive that the city honors those people who have worked for Murcia and who have helped to make it a better place." What needs to be changed is the lack of representation of women in the recognition granted the City Council ".

Alicia Morales emphasizes the importance of the City Council "visibilize and recognize women, after decades and centuries in which from the institutions has been silenced their work, something that is unacceptable to continue happening and against which all together we must fight."

According to the official list provided by the Consistory, between 1837 and 2017 the City Council has granted its highest distinctions (illustrious son, adopted son, favorite son, gold medal and silver medal) to 131 people, institutions and groups.

Of them, 95 to specific people, with the most varied professions: writers and artists, doctors, politicians, professors, journalists, etc.

However, as Morales points out, in this list there is only one woman, honored in 2009 for her status as a waitress for the Virgen de la Fuensanta.

"Undoubtedly in all these decades there have been many more women, from all areas, worthy of being decorated," says the councilor.

For Morales, it is "another example of how we continue to live in institutions that have not yet been updated, and that it still costs, in institutions and in society, to recognize the work of women." A city should not silence his illustrious women, so we must move forward so that Murcia stops making them invisible ".

The councilor emphasizes the fact that "we are not only talking about what happened in the XIX century or during the dictatorship, but in 43 years of democracy the City Council has continued to ignore the role of women, so it is a situation that we have to change to adapt it to the 21st century ".

"The highest distinction offered by the city to its illustrious people is forgetting half of the population," he adds, "and of the important work that many women, born or not in Murcia, have done for the good of the city. "

The spokeswoman of Ahora Murcia recalls that the opposition is demanding, from the beginning of the present mandate, that the Honors and Distinctions Regulation, dating from 1967, be reformed and obsolete.

"When it is finally updated", he advances, "from Now Murcia we will propose that we study how gender criteria can be taken into account, to end this situation of silencing women".

Alicia Morales concludes that "the administrations, in this case the City Council, have a very important role when it comes to combating the patriarchal and machista parameters that still exist in many aspects of our society, among which this one we are talking about. the measures within our reach to advance equality and the visibility of women ".
