A seminar at the University of Murcia analyzes melon genetics (08/05/2018)

The Faculty of Biology, the Forum of Biotechnology of Plants of the Region of Murcia (BioMur) and the Seneca Foundation have organized a seminar on the genetic study of melon, which will take place on Wednesday, May 9, at 11 am in the lounge of degrees of the faculty of Biology (Campus of Espinardo).

The day will include two presentations by Jordi García-Mas and Lara Pereira, researchers from the Agrigenomics Research Center (CRAG) of Barcelona.

One of the objectives of horticultural science is to learn to control crops and make them more attractive to the consumer.

In recent years, the studies and advances in this field have been spectacular and shows that, today, the genetic map of a large part of our fruits and vegetables is known.

Specifically, the study of the melon genome has been a significant advance for these researchers, since it has allowed them to identify some genes responsible for characters of agronomic interest in a fast and efficient manner.

In addition, the project of sequencing the genome of this fruit has allowed the scientific community that uses melon as a study model to benefit from this new tool in different areas of research.
