A few days at the UMU to show that the blind can also discover galaxies (03/05/2018)

The University of Murcia celebrates the next 4, 5 and 6 of May the X Days of the Association of Professionals of Rehabilitation of the People with Visual Disability (ASPREH).

In this edition, the conference is dedicated to the 'Diversity in visual abilities' to draw attention to what people with visual disabilities can contribute to society.

The lectures will take place in the Hemicycle of the Faculty of Arts throughout Saturday and Sunday.

The day of tomorrow Friday will be dedicated to the presentation of experiences for the visually impaired in the Archaeological Museum of Murcia.

Throughout the sessions will be shown what people with low vision or blindness contribute to science, arts, education, sports, culture and welfare.

They will disseminate affected people who have not stopped their professional, family and personal lives due to the disease, but have adapted to the situation, arriving and helping others to reach all kinds of goals.

One of the most prominent guests is Enrique Pérez Montero, an astrophysicist who was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa at the age of 25 and who dedicates his professional activity to researching galaxies for the Higher Center for Scientific Research (CSIC).

Some of the Spanish specialists will also intervene with some of the most relevant scientific and clinical contributions in the field of visual rehabilitation, such as Dr. Elena Rodríguez, ophthalmologist at Hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca;

Dr. Nicolás Cuenca, cell biologist at the University of Alicante, or the inaugural lecturer, Dr. Salvador Martínez, director of the Institute of Neuroscience at the Miguel Hernández-CSIC University.

Prior to the start of the conferences, this Friday will take place two experiences for people with visual disabilities.

In the first one, a 'Blind Visit to the Museum' will be developed, within the framework of a set of actions, in which ONCE collaborates to promote the accessibility of the visually impaired to all facilities and services.

Subsequently, about thirty specialists will visit Santa Eulalia, university neighborhood par excellence, to know first hand a unique experience that for six months has developed its association of merchants, with the collaboration of the Faculty of Optics and Optometry and the University Clinic of Integral Vision , to improve the merchant's attention to people with visual disabilities.

The project, called 'Here we have it in mind', was initiated by the National Platform'Tengo Baja Visión' two years ago, but it has been in Murcia the first time it is undertaken involving 22 traditional shops.

In addition, during the celebration of the conference will be located in the lobby of La Merced a room of posters on research into visual disabilities.

In this context, the presentation of the Retiplus System device, Epson Moverio augmented reality glasses, will take place.

The developer will announce the latest version of this device, which is not yet on the market.

The University of Murcia completes a collaboration agreement with this company.

25th anniversary of the Faculty of Optics

The organization of this event that coorganizes the University of Murcia with ASPREH, coincides with the celebration of the 25th Anniversary of the Optical and Optometry degree.

The University of Murcia is a precursor center in Low Vision and Visual Rehabilitation.

Thanks to the work of Professor Jaime Miralles and Dr. Edmundo Usón, the UMU was the first Spanish university to introduce, in 1993, a subject of Low Vision and Visual Rehabilitation and first also of the Spanish public university system to open, in 1994, a Low Vision healthcare unit.
