Nearly 200 catering establishments in the center of Murcia will close on May 5 in protest "before the injustices" of the City Council (02/05/2018)

About 200 catering establishments in the center of the city of Murcia, including bars, cafes, restaurants and bars, will close next Saturday, May 5th.

This was announced Wednesday, May 2 at a press conference Jesus Jimenez, president of Hostemur, who explained that this measure is a "strong protest against the injustices to which the City of Murcia has been subjecting the sector for years."

"Now there are three new areas of Special Acoustic Protection (ZPAE), but it is only the straw that has filled the glass and has joined the hoteliers who want to hear loud and clear his message: 'enough is enough'", highlights Hostemur.

The declaration of the new ZPAE in the center of the city, initially approved by the Consistory unilaterally ignoring the Sectorial Council of Noise, entails measures as restrictive as the reduction of the terrace hours and their number of tables, the time limitation for opening doors and windows of the establishments to serve their clients, the prohibition of obtaining new opening licenses in these areas ... "But before, we have suffered for years and years many authoritarian and incongruous decisions, such as the changes in the terraces and their enclosures for the cold months, their types of awnings and colors, as well as the paralysis of new terrace licenses, restrictive criteria to set the gauging of the premises, etc. ", complains Jiménez, who emphasizes that the latest measures They have united the sector more than ever.

Be listened

From Hostemur they lament that, since they denounced the new ZPAE and the 'Blindness' that it would suppose for the sector, the negotiation ties extended to the City council have not served at all.

"The government team has its road map and have only been concerned that we annul or delay our actions, without intending to seek solutions among all, which is what we have been asking for: a regulation is needed, but not this one that is based in a study that we have shown that it has many irregularities and errors ", they explain from Hostemur.

"We ask that we be heard and taken into account, we are part of the solution and we believe that with the contribution of all we will achieve that our city continues to have the attractiveness that it has," they request from a sector that has several complaints.

First of all, they ask for a new map of noise from the city, reliable, that will serve to adopt consensual measures that reconcile the hospitality with the rest of citizens and clients.

"We have shown that this study has not been done correctly and that it is not true that the acoustic quality objectives are violated in the evening and night periods in the city center," they complain.

In addition, they ask that municipal ordinances be updated so that they can work in a stable legal framework "that is not at the will of the politician of the moment".

They speak of a model of unified and useful terrace for the whole city, of the streamlining of the licenses for them, of the establishment of non-restrictive criteria to calculate the capacity of the premises, of eliminating the unjustified limitations to exercise the hospitality in streets of less than 7 meters ... "And above all, it is fundamental that all these consensual measures are applied equally to all catering establishments in Murcia, without discrimination or distinction of the place where they are located", they demand.

Great sacrifice

A day of protest on Saturday with the Murcia hoteliers want to show what would be the city without the life that their establishments contribute to give.

"It will have a high economic cost for all the businessmen who participate, who of course will pay the salary of all their employees.

It will be a great sacrifice, very hard, but we do it for the future, for our commitment to a Murcia for and with the Murcia that will not exist if we can not work with tranquility, legal security and dignity, "said the employer.

"We are seeing a union between Murcia hoteliers that had never been produced before and we have to take advantage of it, being strong and courageous, to achieve a dignified future", stresses the president of Hostemur, who has invited all Murcia to the silent concentration of protest that will take place on Saturday May 5 (12 hours) in the Plaza de Santa Catalina.
