The mayor signed an agreement to ensure access to medicines to the homeless and transients (07/06/2010)

Ensure coverage of basic needs of citizens is the primary task in working City Council Social Services through its various services.

These services include aid for socially disadvantaged individual, among which is a priority on access to medicines.

This demand is satisfied by the agreement between the City and the College of Pharmacists of Murcia.

The Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, and Dean, Prudencio Rosique, this morning signed the first agreement that articulates the collaboration that makes it possible to dispose of drugs the homeless or transients whose lack of economic resources allow them to acquire their own.

Although it is the first time you sign this agreement, that does not mean that the City will not perform this service.

Social services, guarantee access to medicines by direct payment to suppliers, but from now when articulated by the College of Pharmacists.

Thus, achieving the objective of giving immediate response to health problems if prescribed by a physician.

By Social Services is managed and measured demand situations of socio-economic need of the beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, the pharmacy network of the municipality is responsible for providing prescription drugs to persons referred by the City Council.

Almost 1,500 grants were awarded between 2006 and 2008, averaging 500 cases per year.

For 2010 are planned for 18,000 euros for this purpose.

Immediate aid

Access to pharmaceuticals is part of a series of immediate aid promoted by the council, which have a more specific and limited to the treatment and prevention of social exclusion.

They include a variety of interventions in situations of need of people transients, immigrants and homeless, related to the accommodation, food and health care, as well as bus pass for assistance to training activities, socio-therapeutic or rehabilitation.

Access to medicines is one of the oldest services attended by the City, prior even to the articulation of social services as a public service.
