Murcia commitment to electric cars (01/06/2010)

The Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, today signed a Memorandum of Proceedings Iberdrola Chairman Ignacio Sanchez Galan, the implementation of the pilot project of electric vehicles, which will make Murcia a reference in the implementation of this transport.

In this regard, the Chamber has stressed the need to carry out the necessary efforts to "Murcia successfully completed its transition to a new mobility model, in which the electric car is called to play a key role."

This should give an adequate response to contribute to the improvement of environmental quality, energy efficiency, contributing to economic and industrial development, all within the framework of sustainability.

For this is real transportation alternative, the city must be resolved as soon as some pre-conditions, including the location of the points of recharge of the vehicles.

In this sense, the agreement reached between the City and Iberdrola plan to study jointly the amount and location of these points.

This is a cargo net design and procurement of equipment and installation thereof in public spaces.

The project could be completed after the summer.

Also, the City Council, through ALEM, be responsible for developing a plan that addresses the provision of load demand and the availability of recharge points and types of public spaces.

For the selection of electric vehicles and their evaluation, the technology of the load and the development of the network of the City Council will be advised and supported by Iberdrola.

Both performances Protocol as the Letter of Intent signed today are the first measures promoted by the city to promote electric mobility.

Half a million cars a day

The challenge to create a new sustainable model is more than justified.

The importance of changing the displacement is increased if one takes into account the increase in daily trips: in 2007 it stood at 883,727 and have increased to reach the figure of 916,078.

Of these, 463,000 are held in private vehicles.

That is, almost half a million cars drive on the urban environment every day.

Transport is one of the major contributing sectors in Murcia for the generation of emissions in Murcia, where 85% of petroleum products consumed is destined for fuel.

The interest of the City by encouraging the use of vehicles that are consistent with a model for sustainable mobility will not start now.

The municipal tax collected since 2008 a bonus of 30% in vehicle tax for the first three years for electric cars with low emissions.

This year nearly a thousand people will benefit from the measure.

The Mayor joined the eco-driving and since 2007 has a hybrid technology vehicle.

Similarly, it is currently hiring the acquisition of 8 electric cars that will be used for various municipal services.

Moreover, the service contract for street cleaning and waste collection pick up on the specifications required to join the fleet of gas or electric vehicles.
