UPyD congratulates the Ministry of Agriculture and Water for its decision to close to traffic Watchmaker Peak (01/06/2010)

Unión Progreso y Democracia Murcia city wishes to express its congratulations to the Ministry of Agriculture and Water to the measure to close the motor vehicle traffic in the area of Peak Regional Park Watchmaker Carrascoy and El Valle, as already announced in the Comprehensive Plan for Prevention and Control of Forest Fires, since, besides the aforementioned purpose of providing fire prevention, is a measure that will result in returning to the countryside the peace and quiet where it belongs.

Better still if it gets too close to traffic as mountain bike trails and paths of less than 1.5 meters.

But we also want to express our disagreement with the felling of 500,000 thousand pine trees, many of them centuries old, with a trunk more than 15 meters high, as we see from the photos of the White Mahal, it is said, to clear the area to protect it from fire.

We understand that the action taken would be useless in the event of an accidental fire in the vicinity, due to the abundant bushes pyrophytes present in these strips of land, with abundant Albaida, Kermes oak, mastic, esparto, thyme, rosemary, etc.., Together with pasture of lastone-and quite rightly been preserved not to cause major erosion problems.

The vegetation in the Plan also aims to enhance, has the characteristic of being highly flammable in the summer, and before an outbreak of fire would spread the fire of ground quickly, and can in 2 or 3 minutes walk the 30 meters stretch and reach the zone of maximum density of pines.

For this reason we thought that was a useless measure the sacrifice of this half-million-Aleppo pine only able to dwell in our mountains in the current environmental conditions, and that the measure represents a lack of sensitivity, the managers of the Comprehensive Plan, with the inhabitants of all towns bordering the park, especially when many locals have grown under the shade of these trees and have even boasted of its unusual foliage in an area as barren as ours, where both costs that develop the trees.

In turn, UPyD regrets that the works of the Comprehensive Plan have not started by something as fundamental as the implementation of the 5 water tanks of 100,000 liters, perhaps taking advantage of a Plan E-and yes would be very necessary in case of catastrophe that nobody wants for our little forest.
