Scientists at the University of Murcia try to unravel the nature of the helical structures (26/05/2010)

Find out why the helical structures that shape is the question that researchers try to solve Geometry Group at the University of Murcia and Manuel Barros Angel Ferrandez in an article in the journal "Journal of Mathematical Physics."

Traditionally it has been said that this structure is dictated by the molecular bonds, although to the authors, this idea can answer the question of how to form a helix, but leaves other questions, such as why a propeller is that way.

In the article, the researchers built a model that, respecting three basic rules in math (simple, variational and quantum), responds in a real and thorough in this type of questions on the helical structures.

Helical forms are very common in nature (vines, conch shells, tornadoes, etc..) And in our daily life, as given in the most diverse objects such as docks, corkscrews, screws or animal horns.

They have even been a constant in all the artistic expressions of all time: the air propeller Leonardo da Vinci, in the Alfred Hitchcock film Vertigo or Gaudi's Sagrada Familia.
