The coexistence as a way to promote solidarity and intergenerational relationships (26/05/2010)

In order to promote intergenerational solidarity and coexistence through facilitating company for older people who live alone and get students with housing accommodations may be available during the school year, the City of Murcia, in collaboration with the University of Murcia, has developed over the course of 1995-1996, the housing program of university students with elderly people.

The service is that older people stay free in their home to a college student and this, in turn, has fundamentally different company and collaborative tasks such as backing on the go food shopping, administrative and other benefits that both agree.

During this course, there have been a total of eleven gatherings started, of which nine have continued along the same.

The gatherings were not pursued by INCOMPATIBILITY, did not exceed a period of testing and the other was broken in the first quarter.

Participated Sept. 9 women and two men by the elders, and eight girls and three boys by the students.

Seven seniors have participated for the first time in the program, the rest have been repeated experience.

As students all participated for the first time in the program except two.

The City grants to 60 euros per month over the student stays in compensation for the cost of electricity and water that the student will rise, leaving the students free of charge.

The service contributes to expanding the supply of services that facilitate the retention of older people at home and can be complementary to others, such as the home help service and Telecare.

Seniors in turn, are generating a new resource for young students because of their studies have to leave their homes and are forced to find accommodation, found in the availability of your company to offer the elderly who are are alone and want to live with them.

The City and the University, with its mediating role offers sufficient guarantee that the property is produced in the right conditions for both parties, without imposing a burden for the greater economic, as economic aid to the City Council granted cover utilities (electricity, water and gas) that the student they may entail.

Features to be met by the elderly:

- Be over 65 and pensioners aged 60 and living alone or situations of loneliness.

- No diseases that impede the normal coexistence

- Have house in good sanitary conditions with separate bedroom.

Features that should meet the students university:

- Resident in Murcia, but non-resident

- Be enrolled in the University of Murcia.

- No diseases that impede the normal coexistence

Scheme of charges.

At the time of presentation of the Student to Staff, the coexistence commitments by both parties verbally agreed at the home of the elder, being present the psychologist at the University of Murcia and the Social Worker of the City.

After a trial period of between 15 and 30 days, shall sign a document (commitment) in which there is clarity on housing conditions and can be modified for the convenience of both.

The basic commitments we can summarize as follows:

Student:

Care and respect the housing units.

Not disturb the rest of the older person.

Not lead to higher costs, except those on electricity, water and gas.

Meals are made independently, unless specific agreements.

As for domestic cleaning tasks the student is responsible for the dependence of exclusive use and work on the premises of common use.

For the Elderly:

Not hinder students' academic obligations.

Also be made compatible with any activity schedule attendance, compliance testing dates.

Weekends and holidays go to their respective homes, unless previous arrangements.

Provide a separate room, and use of other common units, as well as basic equipment.

Both the psychologist and social worker attends the incidents related to the coexistence may occur, mediating conflicts that require it.
