The monumental complex of San Juan de Dios can "discover" the archaeological remains of the Alcázar Mayor of Murcia (24/05/2010)

The president of the Community, Ramón Luis Valcárcel, today inaugurated the new environment monumental church of San Juan de Dios, which allows "discover" the archaeological remains of ancient Muslim palace permanently expose the "generous" legacy the work of renowned sculptor Juan González Moreno Murcia.

The restoration project has been led by the architect Juan de Dios de la Hoz and has involved a total investment by the region of 969,000 euros, of which 761,000 were for the restoration project and the rest to the adequacy of archaeological and museum project.

The church, in addition to visits to the new museum space, among other things continue to host concerts of ancient music, which today constitute one of the events of this type most prestigious on the international scene.

The church of St John of God stands on the same site where King Alfonso X the Wise ordered to build the first sanctuary in the city dedicated to the Virgin, on the grounds of the castle Muslim.

The choir and the ambulatory of the church is now displayed, become new exhibition space to permanently display the legacy that Juan Gonzalez Moreno made in 1996 to the Autonomous Community of Murcia.

The set is made up of both sculptures exhibited in varied themes and different sizes, such as drawings.

On the ground floor of the monuments have been discovered to be visited the archaeological remains of ancient Muslim fortress and the wall 30 meters long, which belonged to the defensive line of the Mayor of the city fortress.

It is an area of great historical value which have been preserved arc interesting remains of a chapel or 'mihrab', with its original polychrome decoration and a real vault or 'rawda', with nine tombs tumular structure, attributed to the family of Ibn Mardanis sovereign, the 'King Lobo' (1147-1172).
