A sculpture inaugurated today by Mayor identifies Murcia Sustainable City (21/05/2010)

The image that identifies and distinguishes Murcia as a sustainable city is exhibited today in urban thoroughfare.

The Mayor, Miguel Ángel Cámara, accompanied by the responsibility of the Environment and Urban Quality, Adela Martinez-Cacho, inaugurated this morning the sculpture, which reproduces the image of the Sustainable City Award in Spain, which was granted last year by the political commitment with respect to the environment and combating climate change.

The award, then picked up the Mayor, is now shared by all citizens.

With this goal has reproduced the award, whose image is the spine of a fish-treated steel, located on the roundabout Mariano Rojas Avenue at its intersection with Avenue Royal Academy of Medicine.

The sculpture will be easily visible.

On the one hand, its size-about 8 feet high and 5 feet in width, but also for its unique and ecological enlightenment.

For the first time in Murcia, has installed four solar lanterns to illuminate both the work and the roundabout.

Only visually distinguished from the conventional rectangular shape, instead of the oval that is more characteristic, and solar panels that are attached to the column with an associated battery.

Thus, during daylight hours streetlights will supply solar energy, which will accumulate in the batteries for operation when needed at night.

In this way, and despite not being connected to the mains, lighting, LED technology will provide a white light, high quality, with a power of 60 watts, which is identical to conventional lamps of this kind.

The inauguration of the sculpture has also had assistance from members of the jury of the Sustainable City Awards are now in Murcia to select the winners of this year, which 51 nominations were presented in five categories : sustainable cities, waste management, climate change, water cycle and energy.

The prize, awarded by the Environmental Forum Foundation, with support from the Ministry of Environment, distinguishes the Spanish municipalities that have opted for projects and actions aimed to enhance sustainability and to present evidence of the existence of a political commitment to development sustainable.
